The 2011 Charlemagne needs several hours of air to open, which is not surprising, as it has always been a stubborn wine. I remember that Jean-François Coche hesitated to show the Charlemagne when I stopped by to taste the bottled 2011s, as he felt the long malos had resulted in a wine that needs more time in bottle to fully come together. Now, at nearly age ten, the 2011 remains quite vibrant and nervy, with striking citrus, floral and mineral notes laced into a racy frame. All it needs is a bit more flesh, but it’s the sort of flesh that develops with more time in bottle. |

Then brooding and dominated by its structure in the mouth, offer blueberry and blackberry flavors lifted by blood orange. Terrific cut and energy here, and even suaver than the previous wine. Finishes very spicy and impressively long, with serious fine-grained tannins starting drier than those of the Malconsorts but gaining sweetness as the wine opens in the glass. Both this wine and the first Malconsorts got a cold soak that lasted for five days. They were harvested on the same day, vinified entirely with their stems, and aged in the same percentage of new oak. The only difference is the location of the vines: The Cristiane comes from an enclave that on the map appears to be more La Tache than Malconsorts. |

The most complex and complete of these 2011s on the nose, offering scents of black cherry, menthol, wild herbs and sexy underbrush; sappy and ripe but with noteworthy medicinal reserve. Silky on entry, then thick, bright and highly concentrated, with the violet and licorice lift and firm spine of acidity of a top Cote de Nuits wine. Lovely focus and dark fruit intensity here. Finishes bright and long, with serious but fine-grained tannins. This should age beautifully. |

Vinous (92+)Good bright red. Complex, ripe aromas of raspberry, cherry, iron, minerals, spices, pepper and truffley underbrush. The sweetest, supplest and most refined of these 2011s, offering lovely harmonious acidity to its red fruit, red licorice and mineral flavors. Really coats the mouth and vibrates on the long, firmly tannic finish, which features a late burst of ripe but lively red fruits. Winemaker Yves Confuron says the 2011s here have similar precision to the 2010s but more middle, although he believes that the wines have shut down following the September 2013 bottling. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2011 Meursault is totally alive in the glass. Gunpowder, slate and green pear notes emerge from a wine that impresses for its pure energy and drive. Next to some of the other wines in the range, the 2011 is a bit rough around the edges, but there is no lack of conviction and personality. It will be interesting to see if bottle age softens some of the contours. Still, there is a lot to like here. |

Vinous (94-96)The 2011 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières , on the other hand, conveys an impression of pure silk. Here the flavors are more sculpted and finessed than in the Richarde, while the minerality is also more apparent. With time in the glass the beauty and purity of the fruit emerges, but the Folatières convinces for its regal texture and personality alone. Readers who can find the 2011 are going to be thrilled. |

Deep, sappy and vinous, with an enticing savory/sweet quality to the intense flavors of wild dark berries, violet and graphite. Finishes with firm-edged tannins, a very primary medicinal black cherry note, and lovely floral lift. This will need at least four or five years of bottle aging. Chef de cave Sieve noted that the domain owns parcels on either side of the tower in Clos Vougeot, with part of its vines located in a frost pocket that was hit hard in December of 2009. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (93-96)(100% vendange entier; 40% new oak): Good deep red. Much more backward and medicinal on the nose than the regular Malconsorts, offering scents of menthol, mint, licorice, violet and black pepper lifted by a piquant whiff of orange peel. Then brooding and dominated by its structure in the mouth, offer blueberry and blackberry flavors lifted by blood orange. Terrific cut and energy here, and even suaver than the previous wine. Finishes very spicy and impressively long, with serious fine-grained tannins starting drier than those of the Malconsorts but gaining sweetness as the wine opens in the glass. Both this wine and the first Malconsorts got a cold soak that lasted for five days. They were harvested on the same day, vinified entirely with their stems, and aged in the same percentage of new oak. The only difference is the location of the vines: The Cristiane comes from an enclave that on the map appears to be more La Tache than Malconsorts. |
