Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

The 2016 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée Vieilles Vignes is superb, bursting from the glass with aromas of juicy cherries, peonies, blood orange, licorice, raw cocoa and espresso roast. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and succulent, with a concentrated, layered mid-palate, satiny structuring tannins and vibrant underlying acidity, concluding with a long finish. Harvested on October 7 at a comparatively high yield by Ponsot's standards of 38 hectoliters per hectare, this year seems to have been perfectly adapted to Ponsot's style. Vibrant, elegant and expressive, the 2016 is quite different from the richer, more powerful 2015, but in the fullness of time, I wouldn't be surprised to see it surpassing its brawnier elder sibling.

Vinous (91-93)

(from a single parcel in Petit Maupertuis, just below Grands-Echézeaux): Saturated dark red with ruby highlights. Slightly medicinal, very reticent nose hints at black cherry, licorice and earth. Very rich, seamless and sweet, conveying an almost a chocolatey quality to its dark cherry, licorice and spice flavors. Finishes rich and long, with serious but sweet building tannins. This wine, too, has close to 14% alcohol.

(from Clos du Roi and the grand cru portion of Les Paulands, plus a bit of Perrières): Bright, full red. Sexy carnal scents of plum, red cherry and spices. Then quite dry and uncompromising on the palate, showing more soil than primary fruit today. In a rather strict style and tough going at present. Finishes with substantial, slightly drying tannins.

Vinous (90-93)

(this fruit comes from the same source as the Cuvée du Bourdon): Good deep red. Sexy cherry and spice aromas complicated by alluring soil tones. Still a touch of reduction on the palate, but clearly a much sweeter and more generous wine than the Cuvée du Bourdon, with dense, well-delineated raspberry, spice and soil tones saturating the mouth and echoing on the finish. This firmly structured, sappy wine boasts notably ripe tannins and an attractive chewiness. Domaine Ponsot has made this wine since 1989.

Vinous (92-94)

(bottled in December; a tiny crop from vines on Pernand's border with Aloxe): Pale yellow, a bit lighter than the Monts Luisants. Very pure aromas of citrus fruits, white peach and crushed stone. A very fresh, pristine style that's rather closed and backward following the bottling but not hard or austere. This wine fills the mouth without giving any impression of weightiness or overripeness. Most impressive today on the very long, rising, mineral-tinged finish, which leaves behind a salty character.

The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Cuvée des Alouettes offers up lovely aromas of red plums, rose petals and candied peel that mingle with incipient savory nuances of grilled squab and forest floor. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and incisive, with excellent concentration, fine-grained and chalky tannins, and above all a bright, vibrant quality that lends this Morey fabulous definition. It will need some time, as it's much more tight-knit than the Morey village.

Dark red-ruby. Riper and more expressive on the nose than the Feusselottes but still with a medicinal aspect to its aromas of black cherry and licorice. Denser and finer-grained on the palate, showing a note of redcurrant and an element of mineral lift. The medicinal quality repeats on the back end, but the tannins are rich and smooth. This wine is fatter than the Feusselottes; it's usually the other way around at this early stage.

The 2016 Pommard Les Jarollières 1er Cru has a clean and pure bouquet with black cherries, raspberry coulis and light cassis scents. The oak here is evident but nicely proportioned against the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple blackberry and raspberry notes, just a tad on the oaky side although that will ultimately be subsumed and there is commendable harmony and length on the finish. This is very promising and ranks highly against its peers. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The 2016 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Ruchottes is superb, wafting from the glass with aromas of Anjou pear, iodine, tangerine oil and wet stones, subtly framed by a delicate touch of new wood. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with excellent concentration, incisive acids and a long, precise finish. This is more old-fashioned than the 2014 rendition, and if that wine resembles the domaine's 2010, this has more affinities with the 2008.

The 2016 Montrachet Grand Cru is stunning, unfurling in the glass with youthfully reticent but already complex aromas of crisp green pear, mandarin, dried white flowers, honeycomb, toasted nuts and iodine. In the mouth, the wine is full-bodied, deep and powerful, with striking amplitude and volume, immense concentration and chewy structuring extract, its satiny attack segueing into a tense, focused mid-palate and finish. This is an austere, old-fashioned rendition of Ramonet's Montrachet that it is shaping up to be one of the three or four greatest white Burgundies of the vintage.

Raveneau's 2016 Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux is excellent, offering up a youthfully reserved bouquet of apple, white peach, beeswax and dried flowers. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with lovely texture, considerable mid-palate amplitude and a bright line of acidity, concluding with a firm, salty finish that balances its somewhat gourmand attack. Along with the Vaillons, the Butteaux stood out as one of the most complete of Raveneau's premiers crus this year, revealing more and more nuance over several days. Right now, it's quite closed, but I won't be surprised if it becomes quite musky and exotic after a few years in the cellar.

The 2016 Chablis Forêt 1er Cru is a little more tight-lipped on the nose compared to the Les Montmains, requiring more coaxing from the glass. That could be a sign of bottle shock. The palate is very promising with a crisp line of acidity, gentle grip and a live-wire, spicy finish that matches the exotic style of the vintage. This warms up in the glass and shows great potential, but may require your patience.

The 2016 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru has the most expressive of Raveneau’s three Grand Crus this year with scents of dried honey, pressed flowers, almond and a little wild fennel, almost Provençal-like in style. A wine of total sensuality, the 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru possesses stunning aromatic lift and inner sweetness, not to mention phenomenal overall balance. Sweet red cherry, kirsch, rose petal, mint and spice literally soar out of the glass, while firm tannins extend the structured finish in this tightly wound Burgundy. The 2016 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from the Mazoyères side, with the vines averaging 60 years of age. I much prefer the bouquet here compared to the Echézeaux: well defined with good mineral tones, redcurrant and cranberry fruit with hints of undergrowth and even a tang of marmalade. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, quite structured for a Charmes-Chambertin with a solid, quite grippy finish that needs to muster a little more charm by the finish. Give this 3 or 4 years in bottle.

The maiden 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux has a vibrant bouquet with plenty of raspberry and crushed strawberry scents, a fine bead of acidity, faint traces of tobacco developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, crisp acidity, plenty of freshness but missing a little substance and complexity toward the foursquare finish. Not bad, but I suspect that there is better in the pipeline.

Bright medium red. Discreet, pristine scents of dark cherry, flowers and crushed rock. Wonderfully rich and fine-grained, offering outstanding inner-mouth tension to its medicinal red cherry and licorice flavors complicated by minerals, spices and flowers. Less accessible today than the Cailles (Chevillon noted that in November it was the other way around) but this wine really dances on the palate and rises inexorably on the sappy, mouthcoating finish.

The 2016 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru contains 100% whole cluster and is matured in one-third new oak. It has a really beautiful bouquet that you could easily mistake for Christophe Roumier’s: blackberry, blueberry, a hint of crushed violet and fine mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of fine-grain tannin, the new oak perfectly sutured into the black and blue fruit with superb delineation and focus towards the silky smooth finish. This is one of the best 2016s Bonnes-Mares that I have tasted, if not the best.

Good medium red. Spicy red fruits complicated by soil nuances on the nose. Showed a captivating red cherry perfume with air, along with harmonious acidity and considerable finesse. Finishes juicy and firmly tannic, with noteworthy floral persistence for its appellation. Groffier told me he did no extraction at all for half of this cuvée. As in many past vintages, this should make a serious Bourgogne and yet it also conveys a relaxed quality. (Incidentally, the estate's Passetoutgrains, which includes one-third Gamay, is also a winner in 2016, offering juicy, savory red fruit aromas and flavors and a firm finish.)

Sweet red cherry, kirsch, rose petal, mint and spice literally soar out of the glass, while firm tannins extend the structured finish in this tightly wound Burgundy. The 2016 is aging in 350L barrels. The larger format seems to confer an extra element of finesse that makes the Charmes totally seductive. - Antonio Galloni

Wine Advocate (90-92)

The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Cailles 1er Cru has a very classy and well defined bouquet with pure black cherries, raspberry and light mineral aromas that unfurl from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, very focused with lovely grip and poised, slightly gritty in texture towards the finish but it boasts impressive length. Superb. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

Vinous (93-95)

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has a tightly wound bouquet with red cherries, raspberry and touches of crushed strawberry. The wine comes across as well defined if just missing some joie-de-vivre that thankfully evolves with time. Conservative for an Amoureuses, but that is a virtue because there is a beguiling effortlessness here. And that translates across to the palate: very well judged acidity, structured and with disarming purity and elegance on the sensual finish. Complete. Stunning. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Les Hauts-Doix 1er Cru has an extremely pure and sensual bouquet with perfumed red cherries, crushed strawberry and vanillary scents from the new oak that needs a few more months to be fully subsumed. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a fine bead of acidity. It is not the most complex Chambolle-Musigny, but it feels approachable and flatters the senses. Enjoy over the next 12 years. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.
