Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Wine Advocate (89-91)

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Jouises Vieilles Vignes includes 25% new oak with 50% to 55% whole bunch. It has a very elegant bouquet, one of the most floral within the Heresztyn-Mazzini range. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, good acidity, very classic in style with ample blackberry and bilberry fruit on the finish, a touch of tobacco and spice lingering on the aftertaste. Fine.

Wine Advocate (92-94)

Raised in 35% new oak with 55% whole bunch fruit, the 2016 Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru les Millandes has an engaging bouquet with black fruit, wet limestone and sea spray scents. It is beautifully defined and very focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, slightly grainy tannin. There is plenty of smoke-tinged, almost flinty black and red fruit with a very harmonious, quite structured finish that feels persistence and satisfying. This is one of the strongest contributions from Heresztyn-Mazzini.

The 2016 Viré-Clessé wafts from the glass with notes of musky peach and dried white flowers, framed by sublet reduction. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, tense and racy, with good depth at the core and an attractive sense of completeness. It will need some time in the cellar to unwind after bottling, but it's an elegant, vibrant interpretation of the appellation that ranks as one of Lafon's best cuvées this year.

(from redder soil over rock; 30 hectoliters per hectare produced): Pale yellow. Aromas of iodine, crushed rock and spicy oak. Chewy and densely packed but quite backward, currently dominated by wet stone and mineral notes. Finishes powerful but youthfully austere, with a repeating wet stone character. Lamy has been planting part of this vineyard at high density, but this fruit is not yet part of the wine. (Incidentally, Lamy did not make a Chassagne-Montrachet Les Macharelles in 2016 owing to the frost.)

Vinous (91-94)

A note of musky reduction to the aromas of white peach and quinine. Saline, energetic wine with terrific thrust and salty length. A superb mineral expression. This lot may yet go into the Lamy's classic cuvée of Derrière Chez Edouard. Lot #2, from a 2001 planting at a extreme density of 30,000 vines per hectare, which Lamy harvested first in 2016: Pale lemon-yellow. Metallic minerality and a note of minty freshness on the nose. Boasts superb sappy energy and intensity to its flavors of lemon zest, lime and stone, with captivating sweetness adding to its appeal. I would not call this an easy style but its vibrant, very long finish leaves the taste buds quivering. A great Saint-Aubin wine in the making.

Aromas of lemon, menthol, crushed rock and ginger, plus a suggestion of spicy oak. Very rich, pliant wine with compelling sweetness and terrific energy to its flavors of crystallized lemon and lime and minerals; there's also a pear note here that reminded me of Chassagne-Montrachet. Conveys a strong impression of sappy density without weight, with the smooth, slowly mounting, gripping finish coating the palate with crunchy fruit and saline crushed-stone minerality. This assemblage of multiple parcels should make an outstanding Saint-Aubin wine.

(30 hectoliters per hectare produced): Pale yellow. Brisk aromas of lemon and ginger. Then surprisingly supple in the mouth, offering captivating flavors of grilled hazelnut, spices and white pepper. The 2016 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is matured in 30% new oak with up to 30% whole cluster fruit, two-thirds from Montluisants and one-third Fremiers. It has an intoxicating bouquet that is extraordinarily complex: shimmering red berry fruit, blood orange, incense and a touch of crushed violet. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, wonderful depth and harmony, laser-like focus toward the finish that lingers in the mouth. Stunning mineralité here—the tongue feels as if it licked limestone 30 second after the wine has disappeared. If there is a better Clos de la Roche then I have not tasted it (yet).

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru has a slightly meaty/feral bouquet, just a hint of gaminess that might become more conspicuous with bottle age. Otherwise I find this well defined and with flattering red cherry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. There is a fine bead of acidity here, a pleasant fleshy mouthfeel towards the finish and a residual salinity that beckons you back for the next sip. This represents another impressive wine from Charles Van Canneyt. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts has a disarmingly beautiful nose with blackcurrant, briary and cold stone scents that offer great typicité. Likewise, the palate has a structure typical of this premier cru, denser and more mineral-driven than the Suchots, perhaps at the same time more aloof. But that is what you want from a Malconsorts and there is great precision on the long and tender finish. There is great potential here.

An exuberantly expressive and spicy nose offers up a lovely mélange of pure red and dark cherry and floral aromas. The sleek, indeed satin-textured middle weight flavors brim with minerality on the super-saline infused finish. I really like the delineation and energy here plus the mid-palate concentration is better than usual. In 2016 this is very Chambollesque in character.

The 2016 Corton Charlemagne came from a one-year-old barrel (there will also be a new and two-year-old barrel). It has a straightforward, brioche-tinged bouquet that opens nicely in the glass, with hints of peaches and cream, later gooseberry tart. The palate is well balanced, honeyed in texture with notes of dried apricot, frangipane and a hint of honey. It does not quite deliver the length, but this is undoubtedly a well crafted Corton-Charlemagne from Jean-Michel that will give immense pleasure over the next 10 to 15 years.

(13.5% natural alcohol): Pale lemon-yellow. Much more closed on the nose than the old-vines Vaillons, hinting at honeysuckle. Tighter in the mouth than the Vaillons as well but still in a supple, rich style for this cuvée, with an element of sweetness nicely buffered by firm acidity. Spreads out impressively to saturate the palate on the silky finish, with piquant notes of lemon oil and ripe grapefruit lingering.

The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is showing well from bottle, unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries, rose petals, cassis and spices, subtly framed by new wood. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad and nicely concentrated, its chassis of velvety tannin largely cloaked in juicy fruit, concluding with a nicely delineated finish. It's comparatively elegant in style. The 2016 is derived almost exclusively from Grivot's holdings at the bottom of the vineyard as his higher-lying plots were ravished by frost.

A deft touch of wood frames a strongly reduced nose. More positively, the velvety, round and utterly seductive large-scaled flavors are brimming with dry extract on the mouth coating and quite serious finish that displays sensational length and stunning complexity. This is a powerful Ech that is also clearly built to age. Note that my rating implicitly assumes that the reduction displayed by the nose will eventually dissipate as it does not show up on the palate.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92)

(13.5% natural alcohol): Pale lemon-yellow. Much more closed on the nose than the old-vines Vaillons, hinting at honeysuckle. Tighter in the mouth than the Vaillons as well but still in a supple, rich style for this cuvée, with an element of sweetness nicely buffered by firm acidity. Spreads out impressively to saturate the palate on the silky finish, with piquant notes of lemon oil and ripe grapefruit lingering.

Wine Advocate (93)

The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is showing well from bottle, unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries, rose petals, cassis and spices, subtly framed by new wood. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad and nicely concentrated, its chassis of velvety tannin largely cloaked in juicy fruit, concluding with a nicely delineated finish. It's comparatively elegant in style. The 2016 is derived almost exclusively from Grivot's holdings at the bottom of the vineyard as his higher-lying plots were ravished by frost.

Burghound (95)

A deft touch of wood frames a strongly reduced nose. More positively, the velvety, round and utterly seductive large-scaled flavors are brimming with dry extract on the mouth coating and quite serious finish that displays sensational length and stunning complexity. This is a powerful Ech that is also clearly built to age. Note that my rating implicitly assumes that the reduction displayed by the nose will eventually dissipate as it does not show up on the palate.

Vinous (88-91)

(made from 12 parcels encompassing 7 different terroirs, according to Grivot): Bright, dark red. Aromas of black cherry and cocoa powder. Juicy and energetic, showing lovely inner-mouth lift and refinement to its flavors of black fruits, licorice, violet and cocoa powder. Quite tightly wound on the sappy back end, spreading out subtly and leaving behind vibrant note of spices and black pepper.
