(Incidentally, I found the Bourgogne Blanc Le Clos du Château de Puligny-Montrachet a bit too tropical and liqueur-like, with its nutty oak element amplifying its hint of oxidation.)

    (two barrels produced, vs. a normal eight): Bright, pale yellow. Vibrant aromas of lemon gelato and wild herbs. Very complex, pure and refined, boasting an utterly silky, seamless texture to its intense citrus peel, fresh herb and mineral flavors. Really outstanding inner-mouth energy here, followed by a slowly mounting finish that saturates the taste buds. A great wine in the making, but not for drinking anytime soon. (I found the 2017 version a bit juicier and fruitier, and there will be ten barrels of the younger vintage as the crop level was generous.) According to winemaker Frédéric Barnier, 2017 has more sweetness as a vintage, but while the '17 Chevalier-Montrachet is round, opulent and tasty, the '16 is extremely pure, fresh and linear, and will expand with time in the cellar. But even today it's silky, tactile, edge-free and extremely long.

    The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is a blend of a parcel from the north of the village of Gevrey, a parcel in Aux Etelois that is not selected for that cuvée, and fruit from Pressonnnier. It felt open on the nose with raspberry preserve and crushed strawberry scents. The palate is nicely balanced, bright and pretty in the mouth with a keen line of acidity, then battening down the hatches toward the tightly coiled finish that will open by the time of bottling. There is good potential here, but it will require a couple of years in bottle.

This wine may not have the volume or power of the Combe d'Orveau but I suspect it will dance on its sibling's grave.

    (due to the tiny crop in 2016, Faiveley blended its two plots to make three-quarters of a barrel of wine; vinified with 50% whole clusters): Bright, dark red-ruby. Musky, smoky, reduced nose. Then wonderfully silky and rich on the palate, with its flavors of dark chocolate, black tea and cocoa powder conveying a powerful terroir character. Today the wine's fruit is in the deep background, yet this smoky, chocolatey Musigny conveys great breed. Not a wine, but a tasting experience for the connoisseur, says Jérôme Flous. Today I prefer the two Clos de Bèze cuvées and the Clos des Cortons for their pure fruit intensity. (Incidentally the 2015 Musigny Joseph Faiveley, made from Faiveley's recent purchase of a tiny parcel of vines from the Dufouleur family, was bottled in magnums.)

    Vines aged 46 years. 24 hl/ha. Harvested 23–24 September. Bottled late March 2018. 868 dozen produced. Lightish ruby. Very pretty cherry fruit jumping from the glass and just a touch of wild herbs from the whole-bunch influence. Opens up to a more peppery lift, almost makes me want to sneeze. I’ve never taken snuff but I wonder if the revitalising effect is similar? There’s still all that tangy wild cherry on the palate but it is more severe than I expected from the nose, really corseted by the super-fine but strict tannins. Amazing power after such a pretty first impression. As with the Romanée-St-Vivant, the whole-bunch aroma – very hard to describe but it has a sort of fresh, herbal, dusty, woodland effect – grows in the glass. Finishes a bit dry-edged, with hints of nutmeats and oatmeal. Not a great showing, and likely to evolve quickly. (Incidentally, I found the Bourgogne Blanc Le Clos du Château de Puligny-Montrachet a bit too tropical and liqueur-like, with its nutty oak element amplifying its hint of oxidation.)

    (two barrels produced, vs. a normal eight): Bright, pale yellow. Vibrant aromas of lemon gelato and wild herbs. Very complex, pure and refined, boasting an utterly silky, seamless texture to its intense citrus peel, fresh herb and mineral flavors. Really outstanding inner-mouth energy here, followed by a slowly mounting finish that saturates the taste buds. A great wine in the making, but not for drinking anytime soon. (I found the 2017 version a bit juicier and fruitier, and there will be ten barrels of the younger vintage as the crop level was generous.) According to winemaker Frédéric Barnier, 2017 has more sweetness as a vintage, but while the '17 Chevalier-Montrachet is round, opulent and tasty, the '16 is extremely pure, fresh and linear, and will expand with time in the cellar. But even today it's silky, tactile, edge-free and extremely long.

    The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is a blend of a parcel from the north of the village of Gevrey, a parcel in Aux Etelois that is not selected for that cuvée, and fruit from Pressonnnier. It felt open on the nose with raspberry preserve and crushed strawberry scents. The palate is nicely balanced, bright and pretty in the mouth with a keen line of acidity, then battening down the hatches toward the tightly coiled finish that will open by the time of bottling. There is good potential here, but it will require a couple of years in bottle.

If you want a strict, no-frills, straight-onto-the-fairway Puligny, this is where to come.

This wine manages to combine the best traits of Faiveley's other Gevrey grand crus--not to mention the finest qualities of the 2016 vintage--in an utterly weightless package.

Vividly high-pitched and fine-grained in the mouth, with its penetrating, floral red fruit flavors accented by pungent crushed-stone minerality. Delivers outstanding intensity without weight, not to mention superb inner-mouth tension and saline complexity. This fabulously perfumed wine finishes with terrific rising length. This wine may not have the volume or power of the Combe d'Orveau but I suspect it will dance on its sibling's grave.

    (due to the tiny crop in 2016, Faiveley blended its two plots to make three-quarters of a barrel of wine; vinified with 50% whole clusters): Bright, dark red-ruby. Musky, smoky, reduced nose. Then wonderfully silky and rich on the palate, with its flavors of dark chocolate, black tea and cocoa powder conveying a powerful terroir character. Today the wine's fruit is in the deep background, yet this smoky, chocolatey Musigny conveys great breed. Not a wine, but a tasting experience for the connoisseur, says Jérôme Flous. Today I prefer the two Clos de Bèze cuvées and the Clos des Cortons for their pure fruit intensity. (Incidentally the 2015 Musigny Joseph Faiveley, made from Faiveley's recent purchase of a tiny parcel of vines from the Dufouleur family, was bottled in magnums.)
