Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Beautifully concentrated, this even has a bit of baby fat on it now. That's just fine as that provides a landing pad for the tangy tannins and racy acidity in this cuv e. The vines sit in iron-rich soils which give a slightly burly edge to the mouthfeel, despite the lush ripeness. For those preferring richer Pinot styles, this will show well now. For those seeking more finesse and multi-dimensional aromatic development, give this five years or so. 2023-38

The tannins are nicely textured while the acidity seems to melt into the soft fruit core. Latour receives the "toleration" of keeping "Ch teau" in front of the appellation name. INAO has been cracking down elsewhere on all sorts of matters seemingly simple like this, but I do hope Latour gets to keep this name given its heritage at the property as it was the great-grandfather of Fabrice Latour who purchased the vines after the phylloxera crisis. 2023-32

  • Louis Latour Chateau Corton Grancey Corton Grand Cru 2020 (6x75cl)

    Tim Atkin MW (94)

Showing blackberries and plums with underbrush and strong minerality, this is a Corton with a lot of personality. • Louis Latour Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru 2011 (6x75cl)

    Wine Spectator (91)

A layer of resinous oak shades the cherry and raspberry fruit. Spice and mineral accents show up, but for now this is austere. Should come together nicely, as the finish shows promise. Best from 2017 through 2030. 200 cases made.

  • Meo-Camuzet Corton Grand Cru Clos Rognet 2018 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2018 Corton Clos Rognet Grand Cru is deep in color and sports a more opulent and dense bouquet than the Corton-Perrières; the black cherry, cassis and violet aromas are very seductive and generous at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, quite saturated tannins, and sweet and candied in style, offering dark cherries and allspice toward the finish. Fine.

  • Meo-Camuzet Corton Grand Cru Clos Rognet 2019 (1x75cl)

    Burghound (92-94)

(from a .45 ha parcel of 80+ year old vines). Elegant, pure and airy aromas are comprised by spiced red cherry, plum and hints of warm earth, smoked game and pretty spice wisps. The nicely intense medium-bodied flavors are shaped by polished tannins and excellent verve while displaying good focus on the dusty, muscular, more structured and focused finish where the only reproach is a mild touch of warmth. As is usually the case, there is just a bit more overall depth here compared to its two Corton stablemates. (92-94)/2034+
