Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Wine Advocate (92-94)Aromas of waxy citrus rind, marzipan, white flowers and warm pastry introduce the 2018 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru (Maison Louis Jadot), a full-bodied, ample and enveloping wine that's layered, textural and lively, concluding with a nicely defined finish. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2020 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a fragrant nose with apple blossom, granite and light citrus aromas, though it needs just a little more energy. The palate is well balanced with well integrated oak, fine depth, yet the finish feels a little richer than I would have liked and when juxtaposed against Jadot’s other Grand Crus. Enjoyable, but not intellectual. Closure: Diam |

Burghound (93-96)Don't Miss! An overtly floral-suffused nose features notes of lilac, carnation and acacia blossom that are trimmed in spice, citrus rind and soft wood wisps. The strikingly pure and beautifully defined larger-bodied flavors are not super-dense but I very much like the texture, all wrapped in a clean, bone-dry and compact finish that flashes plenty of focused power. This could also use a bit more depth but that shouldn't be an issue. As an aside, for those readers who were Sauzet fans 25-ish years ago, the '21 Bâtard reminds me quite a bit of the 1993, which is one of Sauzet's all-time great vintages. |

Vinous (94-96)The 2021 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has such an expressive and vivacious nose that positively leaps out of the glass. In fact, if you just imagine a neon plus sign, that probably expresses the aromatics better than anything else. Happy at its survival after the frost? The palate is very well balanced with grace and poise, Williams pear mixed with white peach, tensile on the citric finish. Excellent. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2018 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru comes from the six rows owned by the domaine that usually yield two barrels, raised this year in a single 456-liter barrel that the Bachelets have been employing since the 2017 vintage, as they find it imparts greater purity than the single-barrel size. This has a very precise bouquet, taut and focused with scents of orange blossom and pressed yellow flowers; great intensity here. The palate is very intense, the oak nicely integrated and displaying a keen line of acidity. The oak turns a little more dominant toward the finish, as you would expect, though it is in proportion to the fruit and there is a lovely nuttiness/smokiness conveyed by the persistent finish. This is an excellent Bienvenue but it will deserve cellaring for several years. |

Vinous (94-96)The 2021 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru had quite a lot of reduction on the nose when I tasted it at the Domaine. The palate is where the action is: intense citrus fruit, frangipane, lemongrass and crushed stone, gaining weight towards the finish with wonderful persistency. This seems to grow in the glass. Superb. |

Wine Advocate (97)Things go up a notch or two with the 2010 Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet, which appears to hover on the palate with the grace of a ballerina. The Bienvenues is all about weightless elegance and implied structure, but it is all there in the glass. At times a bit intellectual, the Bienvenues is nevertheless immensely appealing. Layers of soft, perfumed fruit flow effortlessly to the nuanced, feminine finish. A hint of floral honey and almonds lingers on the palate. I can’t wait to see how this ages. Anticipated maturity: 2020+. |

Burghound (95-98)(Don't Miss!) A trace of reduction isn't sufficient to materially reduce the appeal of the honeysuckle, citrus confit and softly spiced aromas that are also trimmed in just enough wood to merit pointing out. The medium-bodied flavors aren't necessarily finer than those of the Pucelles though they do possess more power and weight while retaining a beguilingly silky texture as well as excellent complexity on the strikingly long, balanced and Zen-like finale. This is a very serious and moderately austere BBM that is very clearly built to repay long-term keeping. In a word, superb. |

Burghound (95)Don't miss! Here too there is a whiff of honeysuckle and more floral elements on the ripe and fresh nose of mostly citrus confit, spice and essence of pear. The medium weight flavors are not quite as concentrated though the sophisticated texture is even finer while displaying even better length on the equally well-balanced. This is stunningly good and while it could use a bit more depth, overall this beauty is a knockout. |
