Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

The 2016 Clos de Tart Grand Cru, cropped at 35hl/ha, is the first year farmed biodynamically. This was completely breathtaking in barrel, and now, in bottle, nothing has changed in that respect. It has an ineffably complex bouquet, not as intense as it showed in barrel yet extremely deep and cerebral, black fruit mingling with forest floor, crushed stone and a touch of sea spray. The palate is perfectly balanced with a deceivingly understated entry, before a wave of black and red fruit crashes over the senses. It is framed by supremely fine tannin, the intensity building toward a crescendo as it fans out. The aftertaste is unbelievably long, remaining in the mouth 60 seconds after the wine has departed. The 2019 Clos de Tart Grand Cru has turned out brilliantly. Mingling notes of wild berries and cherries with hints of peonies, rose petal, orange rind, exotic spices and musk, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with a velvety attack that segues into a fleshy, textural mid-palate defined by depth and purity of fruit, concluding with a long and penetrating finish.

The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis La Forge de Tart 1er Cru comprises of a slight reconfiguration of sub-plots as they undergo replanting via massale sélection, including 25% whole clusters. This has much more delineation on the nose, poised and quite floral with more cohesion than the Morey Village. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, much more fruit concentration, lightly spiced with a silky finish that lingers much longer. Enjoy over the next decade.

Much more subtle wood sets off overtly spicy aromas of cassis, black cherry and violet scents. The wonderfully seductive flavors possess a velvety and caressing texture while delivering sneaky good length on the firm but balanced structure. This is inviting but serious and it should repay up to a decade of cellaring. Worth checking out.

(from a 2.67 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the far southern portion of the vineyard). A riper and more restrained nose requires some swirling to reveal its aromas of plum liqueur, blue berry, earth and a more restricted range of spice elements. The bigger and richer flavors possess an opulent richness and a velvety texture that coats the palate and enrobes the firmer tannic spine shaping the powerful, tautly muscular and strikingly persistent finale. This offers a completely different expression compared to the Amoureuses but one that is equally interesting. This too possesses superb development potential though patience definitely advised. The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has an opulent and high-toned bouquet, quite Bonnes-Mares in style, with copious red and blue fruit laced with wilted violet petals. The oak comes across a little stronger here although it is simpatico with the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannin, ripe and vivacious, almost confit-like. There are layers of blue fruit towards the finish that evolves a slightly chalky texture, but there is very good persistency here. Superb. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The white Musigny was racked just before the harvest, now back in barrel. Clear pale colour even with a faint green reflection. • Comte Georges de Vogue Musigny Grand Cru VV 1985 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 1985 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is a wine that I last tasted back in May 2004 at a vertical in London. For me, this is the best vintage of that decade. The bouquet is earthy and spicy, not dissimilar to Christophe Roumier’s of that same year, although without the same delineation and complexity. This feels more feral and yet remains very attractive. The palate is medium-bodied and it is clearly at its peak of maturity. There is patently much more vigour than the 1988 tasted a few months earlier. There is weight and presence here, the tannins a tad rough around the edges and there is a dab of warmth towards the finish. Yet, you cannot deny the sheer enjoyable nature of this 1985 that in some ways harks back to the legendary wines of the 1940s and 1950s. Tasted at the La Paulée in Beaune.

Bright, dark, saturated red-ruby. Pungent, noble aromas and flavors of raspberry, flowers, white pepper and powdered stone. Enters the palate with a wonderful lightness, then mounts impressively toward the back and saturates the entire mouth with fruits, spices, minerals and earth. As flamboyantly sweet as this wine is today, it's most remarkable for its power, definition, energy and cut. The tannins are still a bit youthfully spiky but this extremely backward wine finishes with superb thrust, grip and persistence. It's hard to imagine that this wine won't gain in texture and complexity over the next 20 to 30 years of aging in a cold cellar.

  • Comte Georges de Vogue Musigny Grand Cru VV 2012 (1x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (98)

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Musigny Vielles Vignes Grand Cru from de Vogüé has slightly brighter and more vivacious fruit than J-F Mugnier, and in fact, the two wines seem to go in two different trajectories in the glass, this blossoming and the other becoming more occluded. De Vogüé's Musigny is unashamedly floral in style, very elegant and yet delineated. There is a noticeable estuary scents, mudflats and seaweed, that begin to permeate the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, wonderful acidity and succinctly integrated new oak that is barely tangible. It is intense but elegant, long and tender in the mouth. It is a fabulous Musigny, one of the best that the domaine has produced in recent years.

The 2014 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a very intense, cold stone and blackberry scented bouquet, moving towards subtle marine like aromas (oyster shells, Crustacea) with time. There is just wonderful precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the mouth, firm backbone, a slightly more masculine Musigny with just a hint of savoriness towards the long finish. This is showing great personality even at this early juncture, although of course, it will not even consider reaching its drinking plateau without 8-10 years in bottle. I suspect this Musigny will only gradually open. Tasted November 2016.

Their biggest holding. Oldest vines planted in 1953 and still in good shape. And all more than 25 years old. Deep crimson. The sort of freshness that I associate with stems even though this is fully destemmed. Cedary, cool, dark fruit, intense and just a touch dusty/stony/mineral. The 2018 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is even darker than the Bonnes-Mares. It has a spectacular bouquet of intense black fruit, blueberries and shucked oyster shells, the mineralité heightened over the Bonnes-Mares and lending a great deal of precision. (from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn’t include the .67 ha section planted to chardonnay). This too is quite aromatically restrained though aggressive swirling does eventually coax the pure and elegant aromas to emerge and when they do, they are almost a hypothetical blend of the Amoureuses and the Bonnes Mares. The concentrated, powerful and decidedly muscular flavors retain plenty of refinement and minerality that conclude in a wonderfully complex and superbly long finale. The mid-palate texture is akin to rolling rocks around in the mouth and the finish just goes on and on. This too is brilliant, and the word Zen definitely comes to mind. (95-98)/2041+

As is often the case, this is aromatically similar to the Chambolle 1er but it’s less expressive and perhaps more densely fruited. There is notably better mid-palate concentration to the substantially sized big-bodied flavors that also possess a positively gorgeous mouthfeel while exuding an abundance of mineral character on the hugely long and impeccably well-balanced and youthfully austere finale. • De Montille Vosne-Romanee 1er Les Malconsorts Cuvee Christiane 2011 (1x150cl)

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (93-96)

(100% vendange entier; 40% new oak): Good deep red. Much more backward and medicinal on the nose than the regular Malconsorts, offering scents of menthol, mint, licorice, violet and black pepper lifted by a piquant whiff of orange peel. Then brooding and dominated by its structure in the mouth, offer blueberry and blackberry flavors lifted by blood orange. Terrific cut and energy here, and even suaver than the previous wine. Finishes very spicy and impressively long, with serious fine-grained tannins starting drier than those of the Malconsorts but gaining sweetness as the wine opens in the glass. Both this wine and the first Malconsorts got a cold soak that lasted for five days. They were harvested on the same day, vinified entirely with their stems, and aged in the same percentage of new oak. The only difference is the location of the vines: The Cristiane comes from an enclave that on the map appears to be more La Tache than Malconsorts.

  • Clos de Tart Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru La Forge de Tart 2021 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (88-90)

The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis La Forge de Tart 1er Cru comprises of a slight reconfiguration of sub-plots as they undergo replanting via massale sélection, including 25% whole clusters. This has much more delineation on the nose, poised and quite floral with more cohesion than the Morey Village. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, much more fruit concentration, lightly spiced with a silky finish that lingers much longer. Enjoy over the next decade.

    Burghound (89-91)

Much more subtle wood sets off overtly spicy aromas of cassis, black cherry and violet scents. The wonderfully seductive flavors possess a velvety and caressing texture while delivering sneaky good length on the firm but balanced structure. This is inviting but serious and it should repay up to a decade of cellaring. Worth checking out.

  • Comte Georges de Vogue Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2019 (1x150cl)

    Burghound (93-95)

The 2010 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru opens with an explosive bouquet laced with dark red fruit, mint, flowers and graphite. Cool, mineral notes are woven throughout, giving the wine its sense of urgency. A final blast of plums and black cherries informs the powerful, structured finish. This is an impressive showing. The 1er Cru is made from young vines in Musigny.

    Vinous (94)

  • Comte Georges de Vogue Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 2019 (1x150cl)

    Burghound (93-96)

(from a .56 ha parcel). A wonderfully spicy and exuberantly fresh nose offers up notes of dark berries, lavender, rose petal, jasmine tea and a whiff of sandalwood. The super-sleek and almost painfully intense flavors are incredibly fine and when allied with good richness and minerality, it makes for an almost irresistible texture on the balanced finish that flashes both huge length and focused power. This is a marvelously classy Amoureuses that should amply repay extended keeping. In a word, brilliant. (93-96)/2036+

The white Musigny was racked just before the harvest, now back in barrel. Clear pale colour even with a faint green reflection. Rather a beautiful gently perfumed nose, flinty yet fine, this year the Musigny Blanc does seem like grand cru quality. A little lemongrass and then a crystalline white fruit. Really promising.

  • Comte Georges de Vogue Musigny Grand Cru VV 2005 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (98+)

  • Comte Georges de Vogue Musigny Grand Cru VV 2014 (1x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

Perfectly matched on the palate with that rocky dark-fruit purity, dry yet succulent, and fragrant. Deep and contemplative and so much more to come. Refined texture.

The palate is medium-bodied with blueberry, boysenberry and black currant fruit, extraordinary tension, razor-sharp acidity and a dash of white pepper on the crystalline finish. One of the finest Musignys I have tasted from barrel at de Vogüé.

(from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn’t include the .67 ha section planted to chardonnay). This Zen-like effort is superb and a wine that should also age gracefully over the next two decades. (95-98)/2040+

A bevy of dark, baritone-inflected notes emerge from the 2013 Echézeaux. A rich, exotic wine, the 2013 is all about depth and towering structure. Echézeaux often yields relatively accessible Burgundies, but not here. Liger-Belair's 2013 is a big, big wine that is also going to require considerable cellaring. In 2013, this fruit did not come in until October 5, very late by Burgundy standards.

The 2017 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru was opened by Dominique Lafon just because he wanted to compare with the ensuing two vintages. Who was I to stop him? It is very different in style from those vintages: redder fruit, more transparency, charming, and it wears its heart on its sleeve. The palate is full of slightly peppery red berry fruit, saline and spicy with good grip and a long raspberry and wild strawberry finish. So unbelievably drinkable, even at this early stage you’ll finish bottle.

Very long and tender, this is a marvellous Vosne-Romanée for long-term ageing. Closure: Diam
