Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

The 2015 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru has a cohesive, focused bouquet of pure red cherries, bergamot and undergrowth scents and nicely integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannin and well-judged acidity. Touches of spice and blood orange toward the sustained finish complete a really quite joyful 2015 Burgundy. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

  • Heitz-Lochardet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Maltroie 2017 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (86)

The 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet Maltroie 1er Cru is a little diffuse on the nose compared to its peers. The SO2 feels quite prominent here, not assimilated with the wine. The weighty palate has a lot of extract and fine acidity but it is missing tension on the finish, where it tends to drift. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Maltroie 1er Cru shows a bit of eggy SO2 on the nose that blurs the edges. Despite rigorous aeration I found it impossible to shift. The palate is balanced, missing a bit of acidity, yet lacks a bit of amplitude. With modest depth, at least it is harmonious on the white peach and Clementine-infused finish that becomes woody with aeration. Perhaps give it another year in bottle. The 2018 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru is slightly honeyed on the nose and lacks the mineralité of the best Perrières. Maybe picked just a little tardy? The palate leans to the richer side compared to other Perrières, though there is sufficient acidity to maintain freshness. Lightly-spiced; ginger and lemongrass emerge towards the finish, that should be tamed by time, so stick it away for a few years. Promising. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 white tasting.

The 2015 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Poutures has a generous raspberry coulis and cranberry scented bouquet, a puff of chalk dust in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with an austere entry, a classically styled Pommard that needs a little more flesh and density on the finish. I suspect it would show better with another year in bottle.

Slightly hazy due to a recent stirring of the lees. Highly complex nose combines candied lemon, pineapple, menthol, linden tea, ginger and caramel. Thick and seamless in texture and showing a slightly exotic candied quality, but racy acidity gives sharp relief to the intense orange and lemon zest fruit. Really echoes on the gripping finish, showing a whiplash of citrus and saline flavors. These were the latest-picked vines in 2012, along with the Batard and Corton-Charlemagne, but this stunning wine remains just on the right side of surmaturite.

More oaky and less open on the nose than the Combettes: always the least exuberant of these premier crus, notes Boillot. Dense but tightly wound, showing terrific energy to its chewy flavors of lemon oil, flowers and salty minerals. The slowly building, chewy, gripping finish suggests that this wine will blossom with time in bottle. The pH here is 3.19 and the acidity relatively high at 4.7 grams per liter, according to Boillot.
