Subtle notes of mineral reduction and wood toast can be found on the aromas of green apple, clove and white flowers. The wonderfully intense, focused and muscular large-scaled flavors brim with both dry extract and an almost aggressively minerality on the markedly dry but not really austere finale. Like the Chevalier and Montrachet, this beauty of a Corton-Charlemagne is presently very tightly wound and is going to need extended patience to arrive at its peak. The 2023 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is fabulous. Bright and effusive, with terrific depth, the 2023 captures all the energy that is typical of the best Charlemagnes. Crushed rocks, mint, sage, chamomile, dried flowers and tangerine oil race across the palate. The Charlemagne is often one of the best wines here, as it is again in 2023. (harvested on September 12, with potential alcohol of 12.8%; from an east-facing, cool site at the top of the hill, just under the trees, where phenolic maturity usually comes before sugar ripeness): Pale, bright, green-tinged yellow. Pungent, raw aromas of crushed stone, pepper, truffle and earth: very white soil in character. The impression of rawness continues on the tight, leanish palate, which offers pure flavors of crushed stone, pepper and saline minerality. These old vines sit up against the woods on the Ladoix side, so this is typically later in the succession of picking dates chez Prieur. It's hard to find Corton this delectable and charming, especially so young. The vintage shines through beautifully here. The wine blazes with pure yellow fruits, oyster shell and puff pastry. The 2016 Corton Charlemagne came from a one-year-old barrel (there will also be a new and two-year-old barrel). It has a straightforward, brioche-tinged bouquet that opens nicely in the glass, with hints of peaches and cream, later gooseberry tart. The palate is well balanced, honeyed in texture with notes of dried apricot, frangipane and a hint of honey. It does not quite deliver the length, but this is undoubtedly a well crafted Corton-Charlemagne from Jean-Michel that will give immense pleasure over the next 10 to 15 years.In Bond€1,060.00
