I was blown away by the power, verve and soil-driven complexity of Coche-Dury's 2001 Corton-Charlemagne. Full yellow in color, it’s approaching maturity but shows every sign of a continuing graceful evolution in bottle. Its vibrant apple, citrus peel and brown spice aromas and flavors have been joined by deeper notes of brioche, white truffle and porcini. This wonderfully tactile, plush wine boasts compelling sweetness leavened by lively acidity, and the musky, minerally, slowly building finish begs for a side of crustaceans.Inc. TAX€6,706.49 -

The aromas of liquid stone and menthol offer superb lift. On the palate, this offers a tactile dusty stone character and a sense of mineral solidity verging on painful. Among the handful of stars of the vintage in both its sheer intensity and its palate-staining persistence, but in need of at least five or six years of patience. A great, gripping, somewhat saline wine that would pair magically with crustaceans. More glyceral than the '05 but perhaps not quite as high in dry extract-and not nearly as backward.Inc. Upright and serious wine with aromas of apple, spices and crushed stone. Almost painful in the mouth, with a steely mineral spine giving the wine uncanny cut. Two vintages of Coche Dury’s Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru follow. Neither 2011 nor 2003 is especially highly regarded, but it is precisely vintages like these that can be so instructive because they tell us so much about what talented growers can achieve in challenging years. The 2011 Charlemagne needs several hours of air to open, which is not surprising, as it has always been a stubborn wine. I remember that Jean-François Coche hesitated to show the Charlemagne when I stopped by to taste the bottled 2011s, as he felt the long malos had resulted in a wine that needs more time in bottle to fully come together. Now, at nearly age ten, the 2011 remains quite vibrant and nervy, with striking citrus, floral and mineral notes laced into a racy frame. All it needs is a bit more flesh, but it’s the sort of flesh that develops with more time in bottle.Inc. TAX€6,702.53 -
Wine Advocate (97+)
Raphel Coche told me that the 2012 Corton Charlemagne was the only vineyard that escaped hail damage this year. It has a very succinct nose, not predisposed to go out and grab you by the lapels. The aromatics unfurl with a sense of ease prioritizing finesse over power: beeswax, linden, lemon thyme and fresh pear. The palate is exquisitely balanced with fleeting glimpses of Seville orange and apricot. But there is more about the tension, the effortlessness and that it just rolls out across the finish like a huge Turkish rug. This is the kind of wine that exhausts superlatives.Inc. TAX€7,603.73 -
(1x75cl) 2013Wine Advocate (95)
Raphaël Coche-Dury describes this as the most challenging vintage of his career to date, but the 2013 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is showing very well, unfurling in the glass with notes of yellow orchard fruit, mandarin and lemon oil, almond paste and subtle top notes of petrol and white flowers. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, layered and intense, with an ample mid-palate, juicy acids, chewy extract and a long, saline finish. This isn't as structurally taut as the best vintages, so it will be a comparatively precocious rendition of this reliably long-lived cuvée, but it should deliver great pleasure over two decades or more.Inc. There is fresh acidity, plenty of body and extract, and incredible finesse and elegance as well. The combination of youthful fruit, fresh acidity, and robust density carry this wine to an interminable finish.Inc. TAX€6,376.13 -

Coche began to release his 2016 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru last year, and the wine is just beginning to unwind, offering up aromas of citrus oil, peach and pear mingled with freshly baked bread, toasted almonds, iodine and struck match. Tasted blind at the annual “Burgfest” tasting in Bouilland. The 2013 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru felt rather dilute on the nose -- perhaps picked too early? Bright yellow. Very ripe aromas of lemon oil, grilled nuts, toasted bread and brown spices. Fat, rich and very ripe, with mineral and spice flavors accented by lemon zest, lime and lavender. This initially struck me as weightier and less classic than the 2015, but the wine's strong spine of stony acidity gives it terrific penetration and really frames and extends the fruit on the long finish. Still, this big, smooth wine is showing beautifully today. Winemaker Sieve notes that the south/southeast exposition of the vines gives this wine a crunchy fruit character along with considerable weight.Inc. TAX€553.92 -

Bright yellow. Licorice, crushed stone, lime and wild herbs on the nose, lifted by hints of quinine and ginger. Tactile, savory and intense, conveying terrific crushed-rock mineral definition for the vintage. Wonderfully concentrated and long, without any impression of weightiness. The 2017 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from Les Pougets and matures in just under 30% new oak. This has a vivacious and tensile bouquet with orange zest and Japanese yuzu aromas that burst from the glass. The 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from a south-facing parcel and sees a little less new oak than the Chevalier-Montrachet. Pale primrose, less reductive. The fruit expands gorgeously on the palate, as well as the nose, very expressive and absolutely fruit driven. No bananas, plenty of ripe citrus fruit, plenty of stones. Textbook Corton-Charlemagne from a sunny vintage. Tasted: October 2020Inc. TAX€217.69 -

There is a hint of exoticism to the cool and admirably pure citrus, pear and green apple suffused nose that is presently trimmed in a noticeable, if very slight, touch of reduction. The rich and extremely fresh middle weight plus flavors possess an impressive amount of dry extract as well as ample mineral influence on the austere and ultra-pure finish that seems to go on and on. This powerful and impeccably well-balanced effort is still very much on the way up and will need another 5 to 7 years before it reaches its full apogee. The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru from the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti has turned out beautifully, offering up aromas of crisp pear and green apple mingled with notions of hazelnuts, lime zest, white flowers, nutmeg and freshly baked bread. This wine represents a blend of 45-year-old vines and vines planted in 2007. Production here was 35 hectoliters per hectare, according to winemaker Brian Sieve. In Bond€208.00 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2017 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from Les Pougets and matures in just under 30% new oak. This has a vivacious and tensile bouquet with orange zest and Japanese yuzu aromas that burst from the glass. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, quite taut for a Corton-Charlemagne but it is graced with impressive balance. The spicy finish is welcome. This is a finally crafted Grand Cru.In Bond€1,915.00 -
(1x75cl) 2018Vinous (92-94)
The 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from a south-facing parcel and sees a little less new oak than the Chevalier-Montrachet. It has a more Zen-like bouquet than the Chevalier-Montrachet, which goes against type considering the vineyards in question. The lightly spiced palate is well balanced with a fine saline entry and good weight toward the lemongrass-tinged finish, which feels persistent and satisfying. Good potential. In Bond€187.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)
Pale primrose, less reductive. The fruit expands gorgeously on the palate, as well as the nose, very expressive and absolutely fruit driven. No bananas, plenty of ripe citrus fruit, plenty of stones. Textbook Corton-Charlemagne from a sunny vintage. Tasted: October 2020In Bond€178.00 -
(3x75cl) 2021Vinous (91-93)
The 2021 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru comprises just one-third as much fruit as in 2022 and demanded twice as many treatments. It is just missing a bit of presence on the nose, with hints of white flowers and honeysuckle. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, orange pith and hints of white peach and touches of white tea towards a very elegant finish. Hopefully, the aromatics will awaken by the time of bottling. In Bond€704.00 -
(12x75cl) 2008Burghound (94)
There is a hint of exoticism to the cool and admirably pure citrus, pear and green apple suffused nose that is presently trimmed in a noticeable, if very slight, touch of reduction. The rich and extremely fresh middle weight plus flavors possess an impressive amount of dry extract as well as ample mineral influence on the austere and ultra-pure finish that seems to go on and on. This powerful and impeccably well-balanced effort is still very much on the way up and will need another 5 to 7 years before it reaches its full apogee. Tasted twice recently with consistent notes. In Bond€4,700.00 -

Wine Advocate (97)
The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru from the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti has turned out beautifully, offering up aromas of crisp pear and green apple mingled with notions of hazelnuts, lime zest, white flowers, nutmeg and freshly baked bread. Full-bodied, satiny and concentrated, it's ample but incisive, with a vibrant spine of acidity and chalky structuring extract. Combining the depth and intensity of flavor of 2019 with supplemental cut and tension, it's a step up in quality from that excellent debut vintage. In Bond€7,220.00
