Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)

Bright yellow. The nose suggests a wine with terrific inner-mouth tension: yellow peach, white flowers, menthol, minerals and crushed rock. Fatter than the Vergers in the mouth, with a seductive orange zest sweetness throughout, but kept firm and bright by piquant minerality. Quite tight on the long, aromatic back end. More austere than the Vergers, and not showing the early balance of that wine.

The 2013 Criots Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru has an intense and mineral bouquet that soars – touches of white peach and apricot blossom gently drifting from the glass, flecks of chalk and even white chocolate. The palate is fresh and vibrant, hints of white peach and brioche, oyster shell and citrus peel on the precise understated finish. This will be irresistible.

Hailing from the renowned Burgundy region of France, the Jean-Marc Blain-Gagnard Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint Jean Blanc 2016 is a paragon of white wine distinction. This illustrious bottle is crafted with artisan care by Jean-Marc Blain and his wife Claire Gagnard, aiming for maximum viticultural authenticity. The wine is a 100% Chardonnay creature, born from Premier Cru vines in the esteemed Clos Saint Jean vineyard. Sourced from 60-year-old vine stock, the grape is handled meticulously, undergoing malolactic fermentation in barrel followed by up to 12 months of aging.

Vibrantly typifying the region's characteristic minerality, it presents an opulent bouquet of apple, citrus and a delicate hint of honey. On the palate, a masterful balance of ripe fruit, bright acidity and round, creamy notes persists through an impressively long finish. A judicious pairing to shellfish or poultry, the Jean-Marc Blain-Gagnard Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint Jean Blanc 2016 is nothing short of vinous enlightenment.

Jancis Robinson (18+)

Flowery nose. Very dense. Quite charming on the nose already. Very supple with the weight almost overpowering the very considerable acidity. Crystalline on the palate with a hint even of barley sugar. Expansive, rich and round and a hint of lime. Lip smacking and deceptively open but it would be a shame to drink this too young. Very long

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Bâtard-Montrachet 2011 from Anne-Claude Leflaive is slightly deeper in color than its peers. The nose is a little austere at first, but it unfolds nicely with impressive mineral (slate and flint) scents, well defined and poised. The palate is well balanced with a keen thread of acidity. There is a bright citric heart to this Bâtard-Montrachet with fleeting touches of nectarine and citrus lemon joining the edgy mineral finish. This is a classy Grand Cru – regal but not imposing.

Burghound (93-96)

Here the nose is restrained to the point of being all but mute and only aggressive swirling coaxes the grudging aromas of pear, white peach, apricot, acacia blossom and discreet menthol nuances. As is usually the case there is more size, weight and muscle to the medium weight plus flavors that possess a hint of bitter lemon on the massively long finish. What I find interesting about the 2013 Bâtard is not only that it is more elegant then usual but also that it manages to deliver so much volume and power without any appreciable weight. In a word, brilliant.

Vinous (94-96)

The 2017 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru stays with Domaine Marc Colin as it as owned by Damien's godfather and he wished for it to remain with him, therefore a fermage agreement remains in place. It has a clean and precise bouquet, a little more expressive than some of its peers with crushed stone, sea spray and light citrus peel scents. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, the oak neatly integrated (one out of two barrels new) with a precise tangy orange rind finish. Sophisticated and compelling. (DIAM closure)

Decanter (95)

Set in an isolated position on the slope above the village, En Virondot is the highest Chassagne premier cru, at 350 metres. A Marc Morey exclusive, it's a remarkable site that comes into its own in hotter years. Pithy and taut, it's chiselled, sculpted, knife-edge stuff with stylish oak and impressive focus and persistence.

Vinous (89-91)

Bright light yellow. Expressive nose combines pear, honey, menthol and flowers. Ripe, fine-grained and nicely concentrated, showing more gras than the Chaumées Clos de la Truffière but also healthy acidity and floral lift. A bit aggressive on the back end but not spiky, finishing with very good length.

Burghound (89-92)

There is just enough reduction present to blur the distinctions between the various fruit and floral elements. The seductive yet reasonably well-delineated medium-bodied flavors possess a really lovely mouth feel thanks primarily to the abundant level of dry extract that coats the palate on the lightly mineral and citrus-tinged finish. This is one of those wines that is so exuberantly delicious that it will be hard to resist young.

The 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs Gain displays a pretty bouquet of yellow apple, white flowers, pastry cream and beeswax. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny but incisive, with chalky extract, tangy acids and a long, beautifully delineated finish. It's another wonderfully balanced premier cru from Thierry Pillot.

While Chassagne-Montrachet is best known for its first-rate Chardonnay, there is also a small amount of rustic but good quality red wine grown on the vineyards to the southern end. Home to three Grand Cru vineyards, Chassagne shares Montrachet and Batard-Montrachet with neighboring Puligny-Montrachet, while Criots-Batard-Montrachet is found entirely within its borders. Known for being less rich than Meursault and less delicate than those of Puligny, the best white wines from Chassagne are deliciously succulent with notes of white flowers and hazelnut.
