Vinous (92-94)

Healthy bright red. Sappy, perfumed aromas of redcurrant liqueur, spices and flowers lifted by a spicy topnote. Boasts outstanding penetration and lift in the mouth, with brisk acidity and mint and mineral notes contributing to the impression of vivacity. With its ineffable spicy character, this is a stunning Morey premier cru. Finishes with strong saline minerality and terrific rising length. Part of this vineyard is essentially in Clos de la Roche.

Vinous (90-92)

Medium red. Sweet, wild nose offers scents of red licorice, iron, herbs and flowers, plus a faintly vegetal quality that adds interest. Supple, silky and exotic in the mouth, displaying a fine-grained texture to the exuberant flavors of medicinal cherry, iron and smoke. Finishes with ripe tannins and excellent saline persistence. Very Morey.

Burghound (91-93)

A ripe yet cool nose reflects notes of black raspberry, poached plum and a lovely violet top note. There is very good volume to the caressing yet muscular medium-bodied flavors that deliver fine length and even better depth. This should be excellent in time.

Vinous (92-94)

(destemmed): Bright, full ruby. Deep, almost liqueur-like aromas of cassis and black cherry; there's something old school about this. Hugely concentrated and mouthfilling, with its very ripe flavors of cassis, blackberry, dark chocolate and violet complicated by saline minerality. Finishes dense, saline, floral and very long, with big but utterly smooth tannins that reach the incisors. This is a major mouthful of wine already but it will need time to lose some baby fat. With its slightly high-toned character and impression of fat, this wine struck me as rather 2015-like.

Burghound (92-94)

Notably ripe yet nicely fresh and even cool aromas of poached plum and dark berry fruit coulis are trimmed in hints of earth and the sauvage. The palate impression of the big-bodied and powerful flavors is one of contrasts as the mid-palate is actually nicely refined if dense whereas the wonderfully persistent finish is robust, muscular and borderline rustic, as well as exceptionally firm. Once again, I would recommend not touching a bottle for at least a decade and this beauty should repay almost two.

Moderately saturated medium red. Musky aromas of redcurrant, coffee and pepper. Red berry and spice flavors are complemented by subtle earthy nuances, with harmonious acidity giving the wine a juicy quality. Finishes with lovely lift and sneaky thrust.

Vinous (90-93)

Medium red. Licorice, iron, flowers and tobacco on the nose. Plush yet energetic, with good energy and lift to the subtly sweet redcurrant and tobacco flavors. Finishes with a mineral firmness, substantial ripe tannins and excellent length.

Vinous (95-98)

Good full ruby-red. Reserved, brooding aromas of creme de cassis, chocolate, smoked meat and roasted nuts. Then pure, silky and powerful; an intense essence of pinot. Offers great power and verve in the middle, but this is most impressive today on the brooding, explosive back end, which features mounting dark berry, chocolate and mineral flavors of incredible persistence and subtlety. What a treat it would be to return to this and the RSV in ten years. In 2005, Saouma purchased a single barrel of Richebourg from a new supplier, at twice the price he paid for Richebourg the previous year, and he told me he felt privileged to have a barrel like this.

Burghound (90-92)

Here too the reduction is dense enough to hide the fruit. Otherwise, there is a caressing but punchy mouthfeel to the detailed and refined middle weight flavors that exude plenty of minerality on the mildly austere, firm and sneaky long finale. This is very Petits Vougeot in character with its elegant and understated style.

A pretty mid purple, soft and elegant on the nose. Fills the mouth very well, with a good point of acidity, while staying true to its name of Charmes. Good length here. Drink from 2026-2029. Tasted: October 2023.

Fresh purple colour. 17 barrels worth in all. A middle weight purple, pure clean and lively raspberry fruit, good acidity behind. This is a more accessible style of wine, still with good length, but a little less structure. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted: October 2023.

Made in a mix of 350 and new 600 litre barrels. Mid lemon yellow. A little toast on the nose, this is stricter than Champ Claude, just a little bit of reduction, good length again. Develops a more concentrated apple note further back on the palate. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: October 2023.

From Les Hates and Prarons. Mid purple, A greener aspect to the nose, but an extra degree of classy red fruit on the palate, and a better texture at the finish. Good judgement with the degree of whole bunches, I think. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted: October 2023.
