A regal Puligny with high-toned aromatics, sweet spice undercurrents and dignified concentration, these 85-year-old vines always make a distinguished, concentrated Puligny. Pale, bright yellow. White peach, crushed herbs and dusty stone on the nose, plus a touch of brown spices. Surprisingly sweet, rich and pliant on the palate but with strong acidity that hasn't yet integrated with the wine's fruit. Concentrated, saline wine with a very long finish. Offers outstanding potential.

Vinous (91-93)

The 2017 Volnay Clos de la Barre 1er Cru (where half the vineyard was planted in 2011) has a perfumed, generous bouquet of ample ripe red cherries, wild strawberry and subtle brine-like aromas that are very well defined. The palate is ripe and fleshy on the entry, offering good depth and flesh, with layers of raspberry coulis, crushed strawberry, fig and white pepper toward the ample, persistent finish. Superb.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)

Medium to deep purple, beautifully ripe, so much going on, plump lush raspberry but never losing its thread, more character in this warmer vintage rather than drying it. This is a very good Clos de la Barre, as good as I can remember. Tasted: November 2021

Pale garnet. Friendly and sweet on palate entry with good structure. Dry finish. It’s all there to enjoy. Though it will never be a blockbuster … thank goodness! Decent length.

Vinous (92-95)

(from a yield of just 20 hectoliters per hectare): Bright, dark red. Very ripe aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, mocha and cocoa. Dense, dry and sappy, with terrific intensity and inner-palate lift to the flavors of dark berries, black cherry, minerals and bitter chocolate. For all its concentration, this boasts outstanding finesse. Terrific tightly coiled wine with superb back-end perfume. The noble tannins are in perfect harmony with the wine's material.

Vinous (89-91)

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru is cut from a more elegant cloth than usual. The bouquet is nicely defined, offering perfumed dark cherry, cranberry and orange blossom aromas. The palate is crisp and well-defined on the entry with a fine bead of acidity, and quite linear and correct – toward the finish, I begin missing the sensuality and voluptuousness that I expect from this Premier Cru. Hopefully it will gain some weight once in bottle.

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru is elegant and surprisingly understated on the nose, like a couple of other growers’ this year. It takes time to unfold and reveal crushed strawberry, blueberry and violet aromas, plus a little graphite in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and quite generous, and sleek toward the finish. This is a classy offering.

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet, a melange of red and black fruit, blood orange and a light potpourri aroma. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, quite precise with a minerally finish. I admire the focus of this Les Suchots and it should age with style.

Finishes with suggestions of medicinal red cherry and licorice and excellent lift.

The palate is very well balanced with beautifully integrated oak (one-year old rather than new), leading to a precise, almost Meursault-like finish. Superb.
