The 2017 Meursault Les Chevalières is soft, open-knit and wonderfully inviting. Pastry, brioche, butter, tropical notes and a touch of new oak add to the wine's overt, racy personality. There is plenty to like in the 2017, but I would prefer to drink it young.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)

30% whole bunch vinification, 20% new wood. A medium deep purple. The nose is immediately compelling with the notes of blood orange mixing in with the red berries. Rugiens= red soil=iron oxide = blood orange. This is an exceptionally complete wine, the tannins being fully folded in to the beguiling fruit. Very nicely done. Very persistent. Drink from 2033-2038. Tasted Nov 2024.
  • Y. Clerget Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets 2018 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)

The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru was picked at 20hl/ha due to widespread millerandage that produced tiny berries, according to Clerget. This is completely de-stemmed and raised in 30% new oak. It has a vigorous, intense bouquet of red and black fruit mixed with loamy aromas and undergrowth, a touch of incense emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and a superb bead of acidity. Very succulent and voluminous in the mouth, perhaps just needing a little more bite and definition on the finish, but certainly very persistent. Cellar this for five years if you can and it should turn into quite a substantial Volnay.
  • Y. Clerget Volnay 1er Cru Carelle Sous La Chapelle 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (90-92)

Bright red with ruby tones. Alluring scents of black cherry, violet and crushed stone (wines from this vineyard always smell dark and dense, says Clerget). Sappy and densely packed, conveying an almost chocolatey quality to its black cherry and dark raspberry fruit flavors. Lovely harmonious acidity and chewy but sweet palate-dusting tannins give this wine a solid structural underpinning. The yield here was below 20 hectoliters per hectare due to the frost. I would not be surprised if this wine surpassed the estate's 2015.

  • Y. Clerget Volnay 1er Cru Carelle Sous La Chapelle 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

The 2017 Volnay En Carelle Sous La Chapelle 1er Cru has a slightly disjointed bouquet that requires only a couple of minutes to gain focus and delineation, though the aromatics lack the vibrancy and purity of the succeeding vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with pretty red cherry and red plum fruit, coming across a little conservative toward the finish, but boy, does this meliorate with aeration! After a couple of hours it suddenly goes up through the gears, developing more precision and harmony than it had immediately after opening. My score reflects this Volnay in full flight.

    Vinous (92-95+)

Clerget's 2015 Clos Vougeot is a dark, powerful wine, and yet also retains striking definition as well as tranluscence. Time in the glass brings out the the wine's considerable aromatic presence, while the 100% new oak is very well judged, even at this early stage. Sadly, there is just one barrel of this juice.
  • Y. Clerget Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2016 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is showing very well, wafting from the glass with aromas of red plums, candied peel, exotic spices, dark chocolate and creamy new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a deep core, considerable extract and vibrant acids, framed by notably fine-grained tannins that are very promising for its future evolution. Clerget produced three barrels, one of which was new.

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2018 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru comes from the lieu-dit of Les Grand Maupertui (the same as Anne Gros). Matured in 50% new oak with 50% whole bunch, it has a perfumed bouquet of incense and rose petal scents filtering through the brambly red fruit. The medium-bodied palate offers firm, grippy tannins. A little saline in style, with a powerful, almost burly finish that will require several years just to smooth down its edges.

  • Y. Clerget Meursault Les Chevalieres 2017 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (88-90)

The 2017 Meursault Les Chevalières is soft, open-knit and wonderfully inviting. Pastry, brioche, butter, tropical notes and a touch of new oak add to the wine's overt, racy personality. There is plenty to like in the 2017, but I would prefer to drink it young.

The 2016 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens is also quite reserved, offering up aromas of sweet red berries, dark soil tones and spicy new oak.
