  • Michel Magnien Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

Bright, moderately saturated medium red. A touch of reduction to the pure but withdrawn aromas and flavors of wild strawberry, flowers and spices. Bigger, richer and sweeter than the Clos Saint-Denis, showing a captivating sappy ripeness and serious concentration. The wine's rocky minerality really clamps down on the finish, with the horizontal, integrated tannins spreading out to saturate the mouth and front teeth. Quite powerful but an infant today, with all the elements for long-term aging.

  • Michel Magnien Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 2020 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (86-88)

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has quite an extracted nose with blackberry, cassis and light iris petal scents. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, firm grip, chalky textured on the finish but like other cuvées; it just feels blunt and lacks a bit of finesse.
  • Michel Magnien Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Chaffots 2004 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (89)

Bright, deep red-ruby. Sappy blackberry and smoked meat on the nose. Tightly wound and more serious than the Millandes, with very good intensity to the dark fruit and spice flavors. Finishes with firm tannic structure and very good persistence. These 2004s were bottled in January of 2006. (A second bottle showed less flesh and some spearmint and peppery nuances, but its juiciness and sweet tannins merited 88 points.)

(10% new oak): Medium red. Redcurrant, raspberry and spices on the nose. At once pliant and sappy, with a touch of austerity to the flavors of red fruits, brown spices and earth. Much more about soil than simply sweet fruits. The slightly edgy tannins and firm acids leave the salivary glands quivering. This may be for drinking after the 2015, notes Frédéric Magnien.

Bright, full medium red. Very ripe aromas of cherry and strawberry. Then surprisingly sappy and stylish on the palate, displaying lovely finesse of texture without any undue weight. Wonderfully broad and deep for premier cru, but with spicy high notes contributing to the wine's impression of definition and its light touch; there's also an element of medicinal reserve that I did not find in the Millandes. Best today on the very long finish, which features noble, fine-grained tannins and terrific rising perfume. I'm not sure I would have picked this blind as a 2015, in spite of the almost candied ripeness shown by the nose.

  • Michel Magnien Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

  • Michel Magnien Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Chaffots 2014 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (91)

(10% new oak): Medium red. Redcurrant, raspberry and spices on the nose. At once pliant and sappy, with a touch of austerity to the flavors of red fruits, brown spices and earth. Much more about soil than simply sweet fruits. The slightly edgy tannins and firm acids leave the salivary glands quivering. This may be for drinking after the 2015, notes Frédéric Magnien.

  • Michel Magnien Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Chaffots 2015 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

  • Michel Magnien Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Chaffots 2016 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (91-93)

Bright medium red. Wild aromas of crushed cherry, spices, minerals, herbs and rose petal show subtle medicinal reserve. Tight, discreet and very pure on entry, then surprisingly pliant and expressive in the middle palate, conveying terrific verve and inner-mouth tension to its layered flavors of raspberry, flowers and savory minerality. This deep, long wine tickles the salivary glands on the subtle rising aftertaste.
