With two grams per liter residual sugar, this wonderfully smooth, seamless wine comes across as deceptively easygoing. Today this is sweeter and more open-knit than the Grands-Echézeaux but both of these wines should easily age for two decades or more. The 2015 Gevrey Chambertin Village has a more controlled, less feisty and better behaved bouquet than the Bourgogne Rouge. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity that cuts through the dark cherry and cassis fruit. There is plenty of sucrosity here, but that does not seem to take the edge of the finish that demonstrates good persistence. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, brisk and breezing with a steely, focused finish that lingers long in the mouth. Then superripe and rich on the palate, conveying an almost oily concentration to its flavors of ripe apricot and mandarin orange enlivened by brisk citrus notes. With two grams per liter residual sugar, this wonderfully smooth, seamless wine comes across as deceptively easygoing. (25 hectoliters per hectare): Full, dark red. Tight, primary, slightly reduced aromas of blackberry, blueberry, licorice and minerals. Densely packed, rich and broad; a distinctly horizontal, pliant style of Clos Vougeot, no doubt a function of the very warm, sunny vintage. Today this is sweeter and more open-knit than the Grands-Echézeaux but both of these wines should easily age for two decades or more. A wonderfully savory, silky midweight with terrific energy and restrained sweetness for the year, not to mention noble, perfectly buffered tannins. Harder to taste today than the classic Clos de Bèze, which is showing more energy and salty minerality in the early going. But this is subtler and longer on the aftertaste, with a distinctly floral, feminine character that reminded me of a great Chambolle-Musigny. On the palate, the wine is sappy, medium to full-bodied and a bit dried out from its reduction which renders it rather inscrutable, though the raw materials seem to be good. The full-bodied and tautly muscled broad-shouldered flavors possess excellent power and detail on the stunningly long, mildly rustic and youthfully austere finish. I'm amazed! This is extremely fresh with orange zest and smoky notes, as well as intense cherry aromas. With its stunning concentration and vitality, this could wake the dead! We found the wines in 2015 very easy and forward to taste, with as much focus on freshness as concentration, so there wasn’t a complete break from the 2014s in that sense. The hope is that as the wines mature they will continue to show the balance and classicism they displayed from the barrel. Our expectation is that they will do so and the best wines will live for a very long time with a genuinely satisfying pattern of maturation throughout their life.
