The 2015 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is excellent, opening in the glass with notes of peony, ripe cherries, briary fruits, potpourri, dark chocolate and coniferous forest floor—more wild in profile than Mugnier's other wines from Chambolle. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated and deep, with impressive power and a long finish. This is quite a dramatic Bonnes Mares by Mugnier's standards, and the only criticism one could make is that it doesn't possess the ineffable sense of completeness that distinguishes his Amoureuses and Musigny. Discussing his Bonnes Mares, Mugnier notes that half of the vineyard was replanted in 1988 and a quarter in 1980. A distinctly fat, soft style of Chevalier-Montrachet in spite of its lemony fruit. A bit more serious and firm on the back end, finishing with stony and saline nuances. I'm not wild about this.Inc. (13.8%; from 30- and 60+-year-old vines; 3-1/2 barrels made, versus just 1 in 2016): Bright dark red. Sappy, pure aromas of black and red fruits and pungent minerals lifted by a floral topnote. Wonderfully penetrating and smooth, displaying outstanding intensity and class to its fruit and savory mineral flavors. Offers a compelling combination of velour and weightlessness. Thick and seamless but still youthfully tight, this very pure wine finishes with superb subtle rising length. This very cool site can perform splendidly in hot years like 2015; indeed, the estate harvested these vines at the end, on September 11. But winemaker Gublin noted that the first vintage was 1996 and that the estate has never had a negative surprise, in either cold or hot years. I prefer this wine to the Chambertin for its suavity. And here the terroir (Domaine Prieur's vines are in Les Champs Traversins and Les Poulaillères) dominates the vintage character. A wine of great panache.Inc. TAX€749.48 -

The 2015 Musigny Grand Cru perhaps somewhat predictably has the most sophisticated bouquet amongst Prieur's red wines, with mulberry and blackberry notes infused with cold stone and subtle sous-bois aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin that feel quite bony at the moment, although it will mellow and gain more harmony. Mugnier's 2015 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale is a terrific success in the 2015 vintage and is strongly reminiscent of the excellent 2005 rendition, opening in the glass with aromas of creamy cassis, ripe cherry, dark chocolate and grilled squab. On the palate, the wine is deep, full-bodied and sapid, with succulent acids, an ample chassis of rich tannins and excellent length. This is one of the rare cases of a great Burgundy from a great domaine that is available in some volume, and no one should fixate on Mugnier's Chambolles at the expense of this lovely Nuits.Inc. In contrast to the expressiveness of the Damodes this is aromatically timid and only aggressive swirling eventually coaxes an attractively complex nose of wood, cool and earthy dark berry fruit aromas that exhibit a whiff of the sauvage to reveal themselves. There is excellent richness to the subtly stony, rich and seductively textured medium weight flavors that also possess a taut muscularity on the mildly austere finale. This too could aptly be described as a classic Nuits.Inc. TAX€318.94 -

Ripe, plush and sweet, conveying more weight and texture but less energy and definition than the Chambolle, with its red and darker berry flavors complemented by suggestion of coffee. Boasts good material but could use a bit more nuance and grip. The present but initially very supple tannins turn dustier with air. A restrained but still wonderfully spicy nose consists of ripe aromas of poached plum, violet, lavender and black cherry liqueur. The middle weight flavors possess a highly refined mouthfeel with a silky mid-palate yet the hugely long and slightly warm finish is borderline chewy. There is no doubting the quality of the underlying material and the length here is genuinely superb but it would be fair to observe that this is a very robust RSV. We found the wines in 2015 very easy and forward to taste, with as much focus on freshness as concentration, so there wasn’t a complete break from the 2014s in that sense. The hope is that as the wines mature they will continue to show the balance and classicism they displayed from the barrel. Our expectation is that they will do so and the best wines will live for a very long time with a genuinely satisfying pattern of maturation throughout their life.
