Vinous (90)

(100% destemmed): Bright medium red. Subdued on the nose but clearly darker than the Caillerets, conveying fresh, higher-pitched aromas of black cherry, violet and licorice. This wine's sweetness and richness give it lovely early appeal. Generous on the front half but then distinctly more linear on the back end, finishing with a firm spine of tannins and a lingering redcurrant suggestion of red soil. Bouley noted that these vines were hit hard by hail but today it's the wine's sweetness that stands out, rather than any dryness.

Vinous (95)

(12.8% natural alcohol, chaptalized to 13.4%): Reticent, very pure aromas of ginger and oyster-shell minerality. Densely packed and fine-grained, conveying powerful rocky minerality, with subtle stone fruit and peach pit flavors in the deep background. Strong citrussy acidity gives this wine outstanding inner-mouth sappiness. Finishes with superb length and éclat. This wine tastes like it's from a different region than the Grenouilles. As bracing as it is, there's nothing hard or austere about it.

Vinous (92)

Very closed nose hints at citrus peel, stone fruits and minerals. In a more corpulent style than the Vaudésir but youthfully brooding, with its peach and yeasty flavors conveying an impression of power. This wine was made from young vines (14 and 7 years old) planted at a dense meter-by- meter spacing. Seriously rich but still a baby, finishing with serious slow-mounting length. Very impressive for young vines.

The 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Baudes was picked on September 16 and includes 15% whole cluster. It has a very perfumed bouquet, refined and elegant with hints of violet and blueberry tincturing the red cherry fruit. The palate is crisp on the entry, a little tighter and sharper than the nose was implying and perhaps I was expecting a little more substance on the finish. Hopefully that will develop in time once bottled.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Drouhin's 2014 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is a wine that I might have underestimated from barrel, or perhaps it has just blossomed in bottle. It has a conservative bouquet that needs coaxing from the glass: red cherries, strawberry, scorched earth and just a touch of vanilla from the residual new oak waiting to be subsumed. The palate is medium-bodied with finely tuned tannin and bright red fruit, tensile and poised with a taut, quite linear finish that has class and refinement. This was one of the best in the flight of Clos de Vougeot, and I scored this even higher than Etienne Grivot's. Tasted September 2017.

Vinous (90+)

(bottled in August):Bright medium red. Reticent raspberry and menthol aromas are complicated by smoky minerality. Very dry and a bit awkward four months after the bottling, showing a solid underpinning of minerality but not quite the flesh to buffer its slightly edgy acids and tannins. This will need time to harmonize and expand in bottle, but it appears to be a rather delicate style of Grands-Echézeaux.

Burghound (96)

A broad-ranging and more expressive nose consists of a wonderful range of spice elements together with notes of black tea, earth and floral hints. There is strikingly good intensity and real power to the overtly muscular big-bodied flavors that ooze a fine dry extract that imparts a suave, even velvety mouth feel to the robust finale that also delivers superb persistence. As the best examples of Musigny always are, this delivers that inimitable combination of power and finesse and in doing so deserves the high compliment of being a 'wow' wine.

The 2014 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru has a very refined nose not a million miles away from the Mazis-Chambertin, perhaps with even more delineation and mineralité. The palate is very refined with ripe tannin, lively and energetic; it is blessed with super-fine tannin and immense purity of fruit, as well as sensual and captivating on the finish. This is just a divine Griotte - divine. I expect it to ultimately rest at the top of my banded score. Returning to Domaine Joseph Roty two weeks after the untimely passing of Philippe Roty at 46 after a three year battle against cancer, as you would expect, one is filled with emotion far beyond that of appraising a new vintage. However, regretfully I have been in this same situation two or three times before and found that after obligatory condolences, there is always a desire to get back to some kind of normality and restore that sense of life going on. The blood stops running but the sap will always keep rising. And in a sense, Philippe is a strong spirit, a guiding influence at the domaine. Chatting with Pierre-Jean Roty, he told me how his brother had never relinquished until the very end, constantly asking him about the 2015 vintage. Photos and videos of the vines were bought in to his hospital and up until his last visits, he was still inspecting the vines and doing his best to continue as if he didn't have a matter of days left on this Earth. Perhaps one small consolation is that he died knowing that the domaine had been blessed with the 2015 vintage.

A gentle application of wood sets off the intensely earthy dark currant and slightly gamy aromas. This resembles the Malconsorts in terms of its robust muscularity on the broad-shouldered flavors that possess excellent punch while delivering a touch of animale character on the youthfully austere and persistent finish. This isn't a wine of finesse but it is impressively scaled and clearly built-to-age.

The 2014 vintage in Burgundy has been rung in with a great deal of local optimism and excitement. After three successive vintages of incredibly low yield and quantities, the growers of the Cote de Nuits were ready to welcome an easy vintage and the chance to make a bit more wine. Easy seemed to be the word on everyone's lips as the growing season presented few climatic challenges and viticultural decisions were by and large straightforward.

Tasting the wines from barrel, we quickly learned that the reds were easy to taste, forward and classical, while the whites were truly remarkable. More than one winemaker came forward to declare that 2014 saw the best white wines in a lifetime. Good levels of acidity kept the bundles of ripe fruit lovely, while the overall character of the vintage was in such good balance that the wines will be approachable from a relatively young age, while the best will age very well indeed.

In general the Cote de Nuits fared a bit better than the Cote de Beaune by virtue of having escaped the savage hail which effected the latter. As much as the hail devastated yields, it fortunately did not impact on quality and many producers managed to make some truly exceptional wines with great forward fruit and firm structure.

Overall this is a vintage with a lot to offer and for Burgundy lovers, it is one to celebrate. Each appellaton was true to style and the winemakers had room to impart their own subtle influence on the finish product. Freshness, flavour and verve are the keyword this year and they come together in bundles.
