There are three barrels of the 2017 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru, two of them new. It has a very well-defined bouquet of blackberry, briar, raspberry and estuarine scents (think of cold marshland on a winter day.) The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, beautifully integrated 100% whole bunch fruit, and fresh and very poised toward the persistent vintage. A superb Grands Echézeaux, and a seriously fine follow-up to the excellent 2016.Inc. TAX€3,103.68 -

The 2020 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru comprises of two and a half barrels this year. This has an unapologetically mineral-soaked bouquet: exquisite details and focus, plenty of dark fruit that seems to gain volume with time. The palate is medium-bodied with velvety tannins, blood orange infused red fruit with an elegant finish that knows there is no need to show off. Pure class.Inc. TAX€3,542.63 -

The 2021 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru is backward and bashful on the nose despite coaxing, maybe a little overawed by the preceding Clos Saint-Denis? But if teasingly opens with time, ditto on the palate that delivers filigree tannins and an ethereal personality that defines the best Côtes de Nuits in this vintage. This is absolutely divine and is Collardot's greatest achievement in a difficult vintage.Inc. TAX€700.75 -

5 Star Wine. More of a crimson purple, raspberry seedless, taken a bit of oak, but superlative nonetheless and exceptionally long. Completely mouth filling with great charm, fills all the nooks and crannies. An excellent balance between the fruit acidity and tannins. Still going strong in my mouth several minutes later! Drink from 2032-2040.Inc. TAX€3,175.68 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)
No deeper in colour, and not the most expressive on the nose, with a softer strawberry fruit, which then emerges with full force on the palate. A softer style, a little less tension than my favourites in this cellar this year, though with some wood tannins to help build the structure. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted Nov 2024.Inc. TAX€2,962.54 -

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru is a blend of two-thirds Les Beaumonts and one-third declassified vines in the lower part of Echézeaux, which is actually a single block traversing the two lieux-dits. The vines here are between 75 and 80 years old. It has a very clean and precise bouquet with shimmering red cherry and strawberry fruits that are exquisitely detailed. You can really feel the Beaumonts contribution here. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannin, perfectly judged acidity and just the right amount of tension to keep this premier cru on its tiptoes. Outstanding.Inc. TAX€218.64 -

Ruby purple, a light fine and charming bouquet, one could happily drink this without thinking twice. The Bourgogne may not have any great concentration, but plenty of charm, for sure. Drink from 2025-2027. Tasted Nov 2024.Expected Price Range€180 - €216 -

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes from two parcels that Thomas told me were only slightly touched by the frost, and it matured in one-third new oak. It has a crisp, well-defined and very natural bouquet that unfolds gracefully in the glass with vibrant red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy tannin and tightly knit red fruit. Maybe it misses a little weight toward the back end due to the difficulties in the appellation and the frost, but I admire the transparency here.Inc. TAX€514.32 -
(1x75cl) 2017Vinous (87-89)
The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes from vines close to the Morey border and sees one-third new oak. It offers straightforward brambly red fruit on the nose, displaying the earthiness you would obtain from Morey. The palate is well balanced with an energetic opening, touches of orange zest infusing the red fruit, and quite a delicate but energetic finish. Enjoy this over the next decade.Inc. TAX€142.12 -

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Village, which contains 40% whole bunch, takes a few swirls of the glass to meld together, finally delivering airy blackberry and bilberry scents, perhaps more Morey in style than the titular village. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit, a granular texture and a salty, slightly brusque but fresh finish. Fine, but it will need some bottle age to smooth its edges. A second cuvée without the stems is perhaps just a little less interesting on the nose. Thomas Collardot is not sure what the final blend will constitute but I suspect there will be a few stems in there.Inc. TAX€455.03 -
Vinous (88-90)
The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village, whose malolactic finished at the beginning of September, matured in 25-30% new oak, has a much more defined and fresher nose than the Bourgogne Rouge with lively black cherry and crushed strawberry scents. The palate is ripe and sweet, yet nicely controlled, the oak neatly integrated with quite a precocious tart finish. Maybe it just needs a little more persistency, but this will do nicely. (This blend includes 20% whole bunch. I tried a 40% whole bunch that is being trialled in three barrels. I actually preferred this, so it will either be blended together or bottled separately - no decision has been made yet.)Inc. TAX€142.44 -

The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from Mazoyères, where their parcel is populated by vines planted in 1968 and 1969. The broody bouquet does not disguise that it is Mazoyères, not Charmes, the fruit profile darker than its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with good grip, a fine bead of acidity and a sinewy style. Don’t be afraid to afford this four to five years in bottle. Very fine.Inc. TAX€1,177.68 -

The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru was showing a touch of reduction on the nose, but underneath are fine blackberry and raspberry aromas and touches of potpourri and iodine. The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru was much more closed on the nose compared to the Clos Vougeot, offering tightly wound black fruit mixed with blueberry. The medium-bodied palate displays good salinity on the entry. This is a nicely proportioned Charmes-Chambertin that is predominantly black fruit with veins of blood orange and black pepper toward the finish. It will just need 4–5 years’ bottle age for the aromatics to awaken. This is 15.0° alcohol, so drink modestly if alcohol goes to your head.Inc. TAX€1,616.58 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)
A vivid and vibrant fresh purple, reflecting the low pH (3.30). The nose is exuberant and vivacious at the same time. This is a late malolactic wine and has been reduced, but not today. Despite the thick texture and super charged raspberry, signs of higher alcohol (in fact 15%) I don’t feel any specific heat and the Charmes-Chambertin shows a pretty long finish. The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, which comes from vines located in Mazoyères, has a splendid bouquet with blackberry, white tipped strawberry and light earthy scents that gradually unfurl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine, sorbet-fresh entry, cassis and blackberry that frame a finely tuned and quite powerful finish. Collardot mentioned that he was bestowed by the full complement of 6 barrels this year and this wine seems to be celebrating that fact!Inc. TAX€1,249.68 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)
The fine deep colour goes without saying. Immediate raspberry and strawberry fruit thrusts itself to the front. Fresh dark berries, less explosive than Clos Vougeot, all tightly wound with an impressive intensity. A vivid purple with good depth. Like the Clos Vougeot, the Charmes is not immediately flamboyant on the nose.
