Vinous (92+)

Medium red. Reticent but complex aromas of redcurrant, earth, mocha, iron, tobacco, underbrush and menthol. Suave and fine-grained, with highly nuanced flavors of redcurrant, leather, earth, game and mocha. Offers more volume and aging potential than the Lavaux, but this still-young wine is much less expressive today. Finishes sweet, supple and very long, with suave, fine tannins.

Jancis Robinson (18+)

Vines planted in 1960. Destemmed whole berries with a light cold soak. Three weeks’ maceration in total. 35% new oak. Two months in stainless steel after 18 months in oak. Very heavy bottle... Mid crimson – not an eye-catching grand cru intensity of colour. Heady nose with the merest suggestion of decay. Masses of sweetness and still a bit of dusty tannin and introspection. There is so much here but it’s not quite ready for public display. Truly massive in scale – this wine is still a bit brutal. For the moment it’s a little dry on the end.

Vinous (97)

The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru has quite a meaty nose, featuring plenty of brambly red fruit, desiccated orange peel and dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied with a sorbet-fresh entry. This is a more zesty Chambertin, lively and even a little tart toward the finish. Does it convey the substance of this noble vineyard? I’m not convinced, and that is perhaps reflective of the vintage, yet after 15 minutes it seems to gain extra layers of complexity, and it's only then you realize that this is the real deal. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Vinous (95-97)

The 2020 Chambertin Grand Cru is very well-defined and focused on the nose, mineral-rich black fruit, sous-bois and cedar emerging with time, conveying a sense of effortlessness. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, an almost symmetrical balance with a poised, pixelated finish. This is an outstanding Chambertin that will age with style. Couldn't get your Rousseau allocation? Try this on for size.

The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin is all about sensuality. Silky tannins shape a textured, resonant Charmes that should drink well with minimal cellaring. Bright stone fruit and sweet floral notes are nicely pushed forward in this pretty, super-expressive Burgundy.

Vinous (88-91)

The 2015 Charmes-Chambertin is a soft-open knit wine with mid-weight structure and good overall persistence. This is the only wine in the range I tasted from tank. Perhaps for that reason, the Charmes is a bit reticent. It will be interesting to see if the wine gains more volume. The decision to move this wine into tank and bottle it early, suggests it may not have the depth of the best wines in the range. - Antonio Galloni

Vinous (91-94)

The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is not quite totally put together, and yet it offers superb depth and persistence. Dark blue/purplish fruit, licorice, spice and lavender are pushed forward. Deep, exuberant and immediate, the Charmes offers all of the open-knit, inviting character that is so typical of this site. The 2/3rds whole clusters are very nicely balanced in the early going.

Vinous (91-93)

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru shows the 60% whole bunch on the nose, slightly overshadowing the blackberry and briary aromas. It’s quite Morey-like in style. The palate is well balanced with a structured opening, though perhaps not quite as precise and as elegant as the Clos de la Roche. There’s a touch of dryness on the finish.

Vinous (92-95)

The 2015 Clos de Vougeot is an impressive wine. Huge tannins give the 2015 much of its shape and sense of direction. Plum, crème de cassis, chocolate and lavender all develop in the glass. Ample and powerful in construction, the 2015 possesses very good depth, even if it can't match the pedigree of the Chambertin. This is another wine with a late malo. I hope to have a chance to taste it again from bottle. - Antonio Galloni

Vinous (91-93)

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, which comes from Petit Maupertui, is tightly wound on the nose, quite concentrated but just missing a little amplitude at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, quite peppery even though there is no whole bunch here, fine grip towards the finish. Give this 4-6 years in bottle. Has it got something else up its sleeve?

Dark red cherries, plums, smoke, licorice and menthol are all woven together beautifully in the 2012 Corton Clos du Roi. The firm tannins and brilliant, chiseled minerality suggest the 2012 will drink beautifully for many years, once all the elements have come together a little more fully. In 2012 the Clos du Roi is quite dark and eccentric, but it also holds considerable promise once the imposing tannins soften and release the layers of fruit that are waiting to fully emerge.

Burgundy is Pinot Noir’s spiritual home, and nowhere in the world better illustrates terroir than here. Two vineyards side by side result in wines with subtle yet intricate differences in structure and aromatic profile – and often not so subtle differences in price.
