The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru was picked at 20hl/ha due to widespread millerandage that produced tiny berries, according to Clerget. This is completely de-stemmed and raised in 30% new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and a superb bead of acidity. Bright red with ruby tones. Alluring scents of black cherry, violet and crushed stone (wines from this vineyard always smell dark and dense, says Clerget). Sappy and densely packed, conveying an almost chocolatey quality to its black cherry and dark raspberry fruit flavors. Vinous (90-93)
Pommard Les Rugiens 1er Cru is dense, flashy and voluptuous, yet also very much in the mid-weight style that defines the Clerget wines in 2017. Super-ripe red cherry and strawberry fruit open up first, with attractive floral and spiced notes that develop later. Fleshy and inviting, the Pommard will be virtually impossible to resist upon release. In Bond€459.00 -
Vinous (93-95)
Matured with 20% whole bunch and the same level of new oak, the 2018 Pommard Les Rugiens 1er Cru has an elegant, refined bouquet that gradually unfurls to reveal blackberry, briar and light wild strawberry scents, the stems lending a little pepperiness. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins and very well-judged acidity. Delivers impressive tension and structure toward the linear, very persistent finish. This is an outstanding Les Rugiens, one of the best you will find this vintage. In Bond€414.00 -

30% whole bunch vinification, 20% new wood. A medium deep purple. The nose is immediately compelling with the notes of blood orange mixing in with the red berries. Rugiens= red soil=iron oxide = blood orange. This is an exceptionally complete wine, the tannins being fully folded in to the beguiling fruit. Very nicely done. Very persistent. Drink from 2033-2038. Tasted Nov 2024.In Bond€414.00 -

The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru was picked at 20hl/ha due to widespread millerandage that produced tiny berries, according to Clerget. This is completely de-stemmed and raised in 30% new oak. It has a vigorous, intense bouquet of red and black fruit mixed with loamy aromas and undergrowth, a touch of incense emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and a superb bead of acidity. Very succulent and voluminous in the mouth, perhaps just needing a little more bite and definition on the finish, but certainly very persistent. Cellar this for five years if you can and it should turn into quite a substantial Volnay. In Bond€419.00 -
Vinous (90-92)
Bright red with ruby tones. Alluring scents of black cherry, violet and crushed stone (wines from this vineyard always smell dark and dense, says Clerget). Sappy and densely packed, conveying an almost chocolatey quality to its black cherry and dark raspberry fruit flavors. Lovely harmonious acidity and chewy but sweet palate-dusting tannins give this wine a solid structural underpinning. The yield here was below 20 hectoliters per hectare due to the frost. I would not be surprised if this wine surpassed the estate's 2015.In Bond€414.00 -

The 2017 Volnay En Carelle Sous La Chapelle 1er Cru has a slightly disjointed bouquet that requires only a couple of minutes to gain focus and delineation, though the aromatics lack the vibrancy and purity of the succeeding vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with pretty red cherry and red plum fruit, coming across a little conservative toward the finish, but boy, does this meliorate with aeration! After a couple of hours it suddenly goes up through the gears, developing more precision and harmony than it had immediately after opening. My score reflects this Volnay in full flight. In Bond€329.00 -

The 2018 Volnay En Carelle Sous La Chapelle 1er Cru is completely de-stemmed and matured in 20% new oak. It has a precise, focused bouquet of red cherries, wild strawberry and petrichor scents, lively and joyful. The palate is medium-bodied with a succulent opening of fleshy red fruit (red cherries mixed with strawberry) and a touch of pepper, leading to a cohesive, rounded finish. Superb. In Bond€96.00
