(6x75cl) 2019Vinous (91-93)
The 2019 Fixin Les Crais, which includes 20% stems addition, sports dark berry fruit like the Les Clos, touches of iodine and violet, showing just a little more amplitude by comparison. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, very harmonious with lovely salinity. This feels very cohesive with a persistent finish. As good Fixin gets basically.Inc. TAX€663.83 -
(3x75cl) 2015Vinous (91-93)
(the first vintage for this cuvée, as these vines just reverted back to Gerbet; the family owns one parcel in the bottom middle of the Clos, according to Amélie Berthaut; the vines are more than 50 years old but the estate has done a lot of recent replanting due to frost episodes in recent years; 50% new oak): Bright ruby-red. Pungent aromas of cassis, kirsch, spices, licorice and bitter chocolate (Howell Mountain Cabernet?). Penetrating, sharply delineated black fruit and minty herb flavors are lifted by a note of violet. The slightly peppery tannins build with air, making this wine almost tough in the early going. Leaves the palate vibrating but this Clos Vougeot will need extended aging to blossom in bottle.Inc. Vinous - Neal Martin (93)
The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a light nose with red berry fruit and light tertiary scents. Initially, it suggests a shortfall in complexity and vigour, yet after ten minutes, it coheres nicely and gains bags of charm. The palate is well balanced with fine tannins. Crisp and sapid, this offers tightly coiled red fruit that conveys a sense of energy. Bright and tensile on the finish, this is a Clos de Vougeot that I end up admiring. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.Inc. TAX€931.06 -
(12x75cl) 2016Wine Advocate (88-90)
The 2016 Fixin Village was taken from foudres that had been racked one month earlier. There is no new oak on this cuvée. It has a crisp redcurrant and cranberry-scented bouquet with a hint of wet clay coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, crisp acidity, quite linear at the moment with a tightly knit, lightly spiced finish. This is a worthy follow-up to the 2015.Inc. TAX€1,166.77 -

The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St. Jacques is one of the most expressive wines in this range. The inclusion of 40% whole clusters lends an extra dimension of aromatic lift and nuance. Sweet red cherry, crushed rocks and mint liven up the finish in an absolutely impeccable wine loaded with pedigree. Readers who can find the 2013 should not hesitate, as it is terrific.Inc. The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits Monts 1er Cru has another quite high-toned and opulent nose like Domaine Georges Noellat's, but here there is more red fruit and Pinoté evident. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and ripe, fine structure with quite a minerally, chalky-texture, sapid finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. Just a little lactic and chocolaty on the finish - perhaps from the oak. That will be addressed with time in bottle. Very fine. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.Inc. TAX€963.72 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits-Monts 1er Cru has more intensity and slightly darker fruit compared to the Les Suchots, but it shares the same enthralling delineation and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. This displays exquisite balanced, a little tight on the finish but it is supremely well focused with a very persistent, lightly peppered finish courtesy of the 20% whole bunches. Wonderful.Inc. (3x75cl) 2014Vinous (91-93)
(one new barrel; from Les Treux): Good dark ruby-red; Berthaut told me she finds this wine difficult to taste from new oak): Pungent floral lift to the aromas of black cherry and dark raspberry. Penetrating and intensely, conveying a lovely sugar/acid balance to the flavors of dark berries, minerals and spices. Berthaut got what she called a decent yield here in 2014, from a blend of big grapes and very small berries. Some of these vines are 80 years old and there's a lot of replanting every year. Finishes firmly tannic, even a bit tough; this grand cru will require patience.Inc. TAX€1,121.77 -

(from Les Treux and Les Quartiers de Nuits; 50% vendange entier; 50% new oak): Medium ruby. A bit less unrelievedly black on the nose than most of these 2015s, offering scents of raspberry, flowers, spices and musky smoky oak. Suave, sweet and fine-grained; a very supple, unforced grand cru with considerable chocolatey ripeness. Still a bit reduced but this wine already makes the Clos Vougeot look a bit muscular and foursquare by comparison. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and suave, lingering fruit.Inc. The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru contains 60% whole bunches. It comes from three plots that, still, only made two and a half barrels this year. It has a very well defined bouquet that seems to blossom in the glass, although it will need some time for the stems to be assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very peppery in style with touches of white pepper and bay leaf towards the persistent finish. This is a classy wine, one that is not unlike Dujac’s Echézeaux!Inc. TAX€1,788.84 -

The 2021 Echézeaux Grand Cru saw some protection with candles in the vineyard during frost, though still there was partial loss. The nose opens with redcurrant and light blueberry scents, a touch of incense. The 30% stems is neatly integrated. The palate is well balanced with fine grip, quite taut and linear, chalky, building towards quite a tensile finish though maybe without quite the sustain of the very best examples from this Grand Cru. Yet it is still a very capable Echézeaux that will deliver the goods for 15 to 20 years.Inc. TAX€2,860.54
