The 1999 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is a knockout vintage, surpassing both the '01 and '05 on this occasion. Brilliant, vivacious red cherry and crushed strawberry scents, wonderful mineralité and immense precision. Sweet, fine-grained and intense, with terrific clarity and lift to the flavors of black cherry, crushed stone, spices and mint. Tannins are substantial but smooth and horizontal. Bright dark red. Very ripe but laid-back aromas of black cherry, licorice and mocha. Impressive dense and powerful but rather refined for Clos Vougeot, conveying a youthfully medicinal quality to its black cherry, dark berry and licorice flavors. This this classically dry, deep wine is less strict and severe than Clos Vougeot can often be, but it's still more Clos-Vougeot than 2015 in character. Finishes very long and alive, but I still give the edge to its young 2016 sibling today for that wine's charm and elegance.Inc. TAX€574.28 -
