(1x75cl) 2017Vinous (94-96)
The 2017 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru is the famous crown jewel monopole of the domaine, ostensibly the rear garden with its own spring. Initially it is showing some reduction on the nose, although it dissipates with aeration. It is certainly reticent at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry. It provides that arching structure that defines this vineyard and gives it its longevity, yet paradoxically the mouth sensation is supple and smooth, with just a touch of spice tingling on the finish. Noble, and aristocratic - just how a Clos des Ducs ought to be.Inc. TAX€409.88 -

The 2018 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru, the famous 2.15-hectare monopole of the domaine, is matured in around 25% new oak, although Guillaume d’Angerville mentioned that he intends to use less new oak in the future. It has a very intense bouquet of raspberry preserve, kirsch, blood orange and sous-bois aromas, all displaying wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fabulous density and complexity, offering brambly red fruit, blood orange, orange peel, suggestions of dark chocolate and, of course, wonderful mineral tension on the persistent finish, which fans out beautifully. This is an exceptionally fine Volnay that will age for 30–40 years.Inc. TAX€1,094.72 -

The 2019 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru has a typically aristocratic nose with layers of red and black fruit infused with shaved black truffle, crushed stone and pressed iris petals. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy saturated tannins, a voluminous Clos des Ducs that fills the mouth. Maybe a little spicier than usual, there is a generous pinch of cracked black pepper towards the finish and its normal extremely persistent aftertaste. Class from start to finish, cellar this for several years before even thinking about opening a bottle.Inc. TAX€1,361.12 -

Mid cherry red and apparently dangerously accessible. Seems more transparent and charming than the Champans. Positively frisky. Vinous (92-94)
The 2021 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru, whose illustrious pedigree did not preclude it from frost damage, nevertheless has a distinctive nose that seems anomalous to d'Angerville's other crus: darker fruit, much more marine-influenced, to the point where you would imagine there might be stems (it is 100% de-stemmed like the other crus). The palate is very well structured, edgier than the Champans, more saline with modest grip towards the slightly saturnine finish. This will require 3-4 years in bottle. Excellent, somehow a bit…enigmatic.Inc. TAX€538.64 -

(6x75cl) 2022Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)
(5-Star) The grand vin of the domaine is not the deepest in colour. A wonderful perfume, the most delicate of roses yet with a force of its own, while the little red fruits are very subtle too. This is a wonderful gracious and graceful wine, giving me sheer pleasure even in its infancy. It is constructed in so much detail, little pinpricks of red fruited pleasure throughout, with the precision of long-term biodynamics allied to this vintage of entirely healthy fruit.Inc. TAX€1,795.68 -
(1x75cl) 2007Vinous (89-91)
Bright medium red. Blacker fruits on the nose than the premier cru, lifted by licorice, violet, minerals and pepper. The palate offers less flesh but more lift, with its minerality serving to intensify the fruit and floral flavors. Finishes broad and savory, with sweet tannins and solid underlying structure. Should make a lovely wine.Inc. TAX€148.75 -
Wine Advocate (93)
The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets was showing very well from bottle, wafting from the glass with notes of raspberry, cherry, spice and orange rind that offer little hint of the savory complexity to come with bottle age. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, structured around juicy acids and a fine-grained but firm chassis of tannins that asserts itself on the finish. Fremiets sits above the Clos des Angles, and its shallower soils tend to issue in wines with notable crunch and tension.Inc. TAX€656.64 -
Wine Advocate (92+)
The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets is also showing very well, wafting from the glass with a lovely bouquet of dark berries, raw cocoa, orange rind, forest floor and dried flowers. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, having come together beautifully since I tasted it from barrel, framed by juicy acids and fine, stony tannins. It's a superb wine that confirms the serious stature of this vintage chez d'Angerville.Inc. TAX€649.68 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2017 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru has an expressive bouquet with veins of blue fruit that strafe the vibrant raspberry and crushed strawberry. Here there is fine mineralité tucked just underneath. The palate is vibrant, almost effervescent on the entry with blood orange infusing the red fruit, great tension and quite pointed tannin, a Fremiet that is bursting with life. Superb.Inc. TAX€685.68 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2018 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru, which underwent replanting up until 1999, has an appealing bouquet of wild strawberry, raspberry preserve and crushed stone aromas, touches of rose petal emerging with aeration. The palate is framed by fine-grained tannin, quite citric on the entry and one of the most Pommard-like of d’Angerville’s Volnays. This is an energetic, edgy Volnay thanks to the limestone soil here. I suspect it will age extremely well.Inc. TAX€721.68 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2019 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru (an anomaly since most producers label as "Les Fremiets") is very engaging on the nose with beautiful potpourri and rose petal infused red fruit that is very well defined. The palate is well balanced with succulent red cherries, cranberry and strawberry. There is a spiciness here that becomes more pronounced towards the finish with white pepper and clove, leaving the mouth tingling long after this Fremiet has departed. Excellent.Inc. TAX€970.54 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2020 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet with redcurrant, raspberry sorbet and sous-bois aromas that offers a subtle balsam element with time. The palate is well balanced, fresh and vibrant with crunchy red berry fruit. Good acidity here, classic in style with a linear finish, a hint of pepperiness on the aftertaste. Give this 4-5 years in bottle before broaching because it has an endearing feisty character.Inc. TAX€830.63 -

Bright full red. Red fruit aromas are perked up by pepper and spices. Dense and backward, in a distinctly masculine style. The pepper and spice flavors are given a penetrating quality by the wine's firm spine of acids and tannins. Youthfully imploded today but there's superb red fruit intensity here. Finishes vibrant and long, with slowly expanding fruit and spice flavors. This should evolve gracefully in bottle.Inc. TAX€990.24 -

The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds has an aloof, almost distant bouquet, laconic at the moment, although you can tell that there is plenty of coiled-up fruit waiting within. The palate is usually expressive (as Guillaume d’Angerville himself remarked.) It is very harmonious and perhaps silkier than the Caillerets, the tannins filigree with great detail and precision on the finish. Long in the mouth, this is a seriously fine, elegant Taillepieds.Inc. TAX€1,067.28
