(12x75cl) 2008Vinous (90)
Medium red. Slightly high-toned aromas of licorice and minerals; a bit less pristine than the 2009. Juicy and penetrating, with enticing crushed cherry and berry flavors framed by piquant acidity. Pungent, concentrated wine with a persistent, energetic, brisk finish. Gives a drier impression than the 2009 version but does not come across as green.Inc. TAX€3,043.32 -
(6x75cl) 2013Wine Advocate (91-93)
The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets has a more limestone-scented bouquet, the fruit a little redder than that of Fremiets, opening with wilted rose-petal scents infusing the strawberry and red currant aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a little more flesh than the aforementioned premier cru, but maintaining appreciable balance and minerality that is neatly assimilated on the sappy finish. This should blossom once in bottle. There is class here.Inc. TAX€938.88 -
Wine Advocate (92-94)
Aromas of red berries, cherries, dark chocolate and peonies mingle with nuances of soil and raw cocoa, introducing the 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets, a medium to full-bodied, deep and nicely concentrated wine that's fine-boned and elegant, with powdery tannins and a chalky, mineral finish.Inc. TAX€1,000.08 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2020 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru comes from vines planted in 2000 (the older vines purchased several years ago were uprooted in this vintage.) It has a more intense bouquet than the Fremiets with black cherries, raspberry punnet, crushed stone and silex aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black cherry and raspberry fruit, a taut line of acidity, linear and strict with a brisk white pepper tinged, quite Pommard-like, almost clinical finish. Excellent, but unapologetically hardcore.Inc. TAX€1,189.03 -
Wine Advocate (89)
The 2004 Volnay 1er Cru Champans was poured from magnum. It has a slightly deeper color than the Taillepieds. The nose is more cohesive with cranberry and red plum scents, a ferrous note emerging with aeration. The palate is less stalky than the Taillepieds with more grip on the finish, which needs more finesse. Still, this is a decent wine for the vintage. Drink now-2019.Inc. TAX€166.28 -

In a vintage in which so many wines are all about intensity, 2009 Marquis d’Angerville’s Volnay Champans (magnum) impresses for its perfume, delineated fruit and fabulous overall balance. Refined and impeccable in its sense of restraint, the 2009 is so very pretty and expressive. Silky tannins round out the racy, polished finish. What a gorgeous wine this is. 94Inc. TAX€2,403.36 -

The 2010 Volnay Champans 1er Cru is an exquisite wine that in my opinion surpasses the Taillepieds served alongside. It is just beginning to show a little bricking on the rim. The bouquet is fresh and vibrant with raspberry, potpourri and loamy scents - just so vivid and bright. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of red berry fruit, slightly tart in style with superb tension and fine acidity. Cranberry and raspberry spring through towards the finish that displays impressive tension. This is maturing beautifully. Tasted an the annual Marquis d'Angerville tasting in London.Inc. TAX€3,206.77 -
(3x150cl) 2013Wine Advocate (92-94)
The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a feisty, much more gourmand bouquet compared to its siblings at this early stage with almost meaty red berry fruit infused with limestone/flinty scents. The palate is very focused with an abiding sense of symmetry, long in the mouth with fine tannins (although not as filigree as the Taillepieds) but with the same silky and harmonious texture toward the long finish. Excellent.Inc. TAX€802.08 -
Wine Advocate (93+)
In contrast to the precocious 2017, the 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Les Champans is tight-knit and reserved and will demand patience. Offering up aromas of plums, cherries, violets, dark chocolate and forest floor, the wine is, medium to full-bodied, chewy and firm, with lovely depth at the core but an imposing, muscular chassis of fine-grained tannin that asserts itself on the finish. I have no concerns about the balance of this Champans, but readers should plan on waiting at least a dozen years before pulling corks.Inc. TAX€672.48 -

The 2017 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru is tasted from two barrels. It demonstrates wonderful grace and precision with mineral-infused cranberry and wild strawberry fruit. There is a sense of vitality and sophistication here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin. The 2018 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has an outgoing bouquet similar to the Taillepieds, albeit one with more intellectual weight and gravitas behind it. Black cherries, blueberry and light cassis aromas reveal crushed stone and undergrowth notes, all delivered with intensity and superb delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly firmer, stockier tannins than the Taillepieds, darker fruit and grainier texture toward the persistent finish. I see this has having real long-term potential. Excellent.Inc. TAX€629.28 -
(3x150cl) 2019Vinous (93-95)
The 2019 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru follows the Taillepieds and maybe it should have been the other way round since this is much more closed and broody. Earthy red berry fruit, touches of truffle and bay eventually emerge from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with solid backbone, not the most elegant Champans as there is a bit of grip and sinew on the finish. But because of that I suspect it will age extremely well. Keep a cellar handy.Inc. TAX€1,399.68 -

The 2018 Volnay Clos des Angles 1er Cru comes from a vintage after which half the vineyard was uprooted due to the aged vines that were planted in the 1950s. It has quite an intense bouquet of blueberry and wild strawberry fruit, a little more precocious than the Les Fremiets. Good medium red. Lovely perfume of raspberry and flowers complicated by subtle soil tones. Seamless, balanced and moderately rich, offering nuanced flavors of red fruits, flowers, earth, herbs and spices and no rough edges. This seems fully mature but has the spine and energy to last. Finishes with refined tannins, subtle sweetness and lovely slow-building savory length. Incidentally, the last time I tried this wine--in 2017 at the estate--it was silky and sweet but a bit more decadent and seemed to be evolving quickly. But, judging from the wine's low pH, this bottle may well be more representative. It was certainly firmer and more delineated. (13.15% alcohol; September 26 harvest; 35 h/h; 3.25 pH)Inc. TAX€748.96 -
