70% whole bunch with minimal punch down to avoid the wine becoming too muscular. Even so, the 2023 Genavrières has a noticeably darker purple colour with ruby rim. There is possibly an even greater volume of fruit here than my usual favourite of Faconnières, with summer pudding black fruits and a fresher redcurrant note to join in. Drink from 2032-2038. Very ripe but youthfully brooding aromas of black cherry, licorice, menthol and stone. Then surprisingly fat, pliant and sweet in the mouth, with its dark cherry and black raspberry fruit displaying outstanding creamy depth and volume. Wonderfully rich, seamless and relaxed, finishing with utterly suave tannins and terrific length, if not yet quite the complexity of the Champonnets. But that will come with time. Finishes quite suave, with terrific rising length. Much more about finesse than power. Boillot told me that his holding in Champonnets is virtually split into two halves, the higher one on rocky, mineral soil and the lower one on red clay. (aging in 33% new oak; these vines just under Mazis-Chambertin are now 104 years old, according to Boillot): Bright ruby-red. Very ripe but youthfully brooding aromas of black cherry, licorice, menthol and stone. Then surprisingly fat, pliant and sweet in the mouth, with its dark cherry and black raspberry fruit displaying outstanding creamy depth and volume. Wonderfully rich, seamless and relaxed, finishing with utterly suave tannins and terrific length, if not yet quite the complexity of the Champonnets. But that will come with time. Boillot told me that his holding in Champonnets is virtually split into two halves, the higher one on rocky, mineral soil and the lower one on red clay.
