The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux comes from a single parcel planted by Loic’s great-grandfather, the vines averaging 70 years old. Containing 50% whole bunch, it is very perfumed on the nose, the most floral of Dugat-Py’s Premier Crus, but thankfully the gushing violet and peony aromas do not obscure the fruit expression. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, more understated than I anticipated after the aromatics. This ends up a streamlined Petite Chapelle of wonderful delineation and salinity (though maybe the Champeaux has a little more complexity overall at this early juncture). Not so Petite!Inc. (these vines range in age from 50 to 105 years, according to Dugat; made with 60% whole clusters and aged in 50% new oak): Initially reticent aromas of boysenberry, violet, licorice and espresso show subtle complexity and a stronger torrefaction quality with aeration. Plush in texture but less expressive and harmonious today than the Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes. The purple fruit and licorice flavors are nicely lifted by herbal and spicy nuances from the stems, which contribute elegance and lift. Very easily digestible and not at all hard, but the building tannins will nonetheless require some patience. (Incidentally, Dugat was not ready to present his Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles Vieilles Vignes, as the wine finished its malo very late and had just been racked.)Inc. TAX€2,431.46 -

The palate is packed full of sucrosity on the entry, slightly confit in style with macerated small black cherries, blueberry and a dash of white pepper towards the spicy finish. (these vines range in age from 50 to 105 years, according to Dugat; made with 60% whole clusters and aged in 50% new oak): Initially reticent aromas of boysenberry, violet, licorice and espresso show subtle complexity and a stronger torrefaction quality with aeration. Plush in texture but less expressive and harmonious today than the Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes. The purple fruit and licorice flavors are nicely lifted by herbal and spicy nuances from the stems, which contribute elegance and lift. Very easily digestible and not at all hard, but the building tannins will nonetheless require some patience. (Incidentally, Dugat was not ready to present his Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles Vieilles Vignes, as the wine finished its malo very late and had just been racked.)In Bond€1,985.00 -

Matured in two-thirds new oak, the 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Coeur du Roy has a very pure black cherry and boysenberry scented bouquet. The oak is neatly integrated and the 50% whole bunches impart a subtle undergrowth scent. The palate is packed full of sucrosity on the entry, slightly confit in style with macerated small black cherries, blueberry and a dash of white pepper towards the spicy finish.
