Domaine Drouhin-Laroze has some of the best sites in the Cote d’Or. The Clos de Vougeot 2011 has an exciting intensity throughout that engulfs the palate and exudes power on the long crafted finish. Plenty of wood and warm earth gives great balance to the very fresh red fruit.Inc. TAX€645.26 -

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru from Domaine Drouhin-Laroze has a composed bouquet of blackcurrant and raspberry fruit, a touch of cigar ash and woodland aromas developing close behind. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannin, low acidity, rather extracted and perhaps, just a little monotone on the finish. Maybe it will develop more personality in bottle...it should do.Inc. TAX€1,069.98 -
(12x75cl) 2014Vinous (92)
Good medium-deep red. Aromas of black cherry, raspberry, minerals and flowers are complemented by pungent sweet oak. Juicy, spicy, savory Clos Vougeot with good tautness and saline soil complexity. The dark cherry fruit is complicated by musky hints of leather and game and sweetened by the spicy oak element. I like the sugar/acid balance here and the substantial dusty tannins are ripe and harmonious. This classic, soil-driven Clos Vougeot finishes with notes of minerals, herbs and dried flowers.Inc. Wine Advocate (93-95)
The 2015 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, which comes from the upper slopes of the vineyard, has a rich and opulent bouquet with precocious mulberry and blueberry scents, violet and desiccated orange peel. The 30% whole bunches is discretely embedded in the black fruit, lending crunchiness to the texture. This displays impressive depth; notwithstanding infectious energy and a vibrant finish. Excellent - this is one of the best grand crus from Drouhin-Laroze this vintage.Inc. TAX€1,063.92 -
Wine Advocate (91-93)
The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru includes 35% whole bunch fruit (the first time ever) and was cropped at just 25 hectoliters per hectare because of frost damage. It has an attractive bouquet with copious dark cherry, blackberry and crushed flowers. The palate is well balanced with fine tannin, quite a masculine Clos Vougeot with a good backbone on the somewhat foursquare finish that just cuts away a little swiftly. This might be one cuvée where I prefer the 2015 to this year's counterpart.Inc. TAX€1,748.77 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is completely de-stemmed and matures in 80% new oak. It has an expressive and aromatic bouquet with pretty blueberry, raspberry and iodine aromas that burst from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very effervescent from the start with vivid red and black fruit infused with orange zest and light fig notes. Very fine.Inc. TAX€778.32 -
(6x75cl) 2019Vinous (94-96)
The 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru was completely destemmed this year. It has a vibrant bouquet of black cherries, raspberry coulis and freshly picked roses. There is a purity here that I admire. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and quite corpulent yet retaining definition on the finish, and leaving cracked black pepper on the aftertaste. This could turn out to be one of Drouhin-Laroze's best 2019s.Inc. TAX€1,382.63 -
(3x75cl) 2020Vinous (94)
The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru had the highest sugar levels in this vintage, so this was the first cuvée to be picked on 24 August. It has a very expressive nose, very pure and without any stems, it still imparts an attractive spiciness. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, nicely poised with a harmonious and mineral-driven finish. Excellent.Inc. TAX€521.03 -

Due to the vigour of this parcel, the Domaine undertook a green harvest in making their 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Au Closeau 1er Cru. It is fragrant and pure on the nose: blackberry, raspberry and light wild strawberry scents comingle, just a touch of vanilla emanating from the oak (60%). The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, the 40% whole bunch imparting pleasant white pepper and bay leaf notes that lends another dimension on the juicy finish. This is well worth looking out for.Inc. TAX€572.14 -

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Au Closeau 1er Cru underwent some green harvest to improve the grape maturity. It has a light but focused nose - a mélange of red and black fruit with touches of sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, well balanced with nicely judged acidity. Modest length, this is a well-crafted Gevrey for more early drinking.Inc. TAX€656.14 -

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur 1er Cru has good intensity on the nose of fresh red berry fruit, the oak here nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied, with orange sorbet and Chinese five-spice infusing the black fruit. There is good depth and tension and quite an elegant yet structured finish. This is a fine Clos Prieur, even if it is not the best that I encountered during my Burgundy tastings. Give it 3–5 years in bottle.Inc. TAX€763.26 -

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is completely de-stemmed and raised in 60% new oak. Like the Clos Prieur, it has a vivacious, well defined bouquet with slightly more red fruit by comparison. In addition, the floral element is more pronounced, especially after three or four minutes of aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannin that lend this Lavaut Saint-Jacques a silky smooth texture. There are darker fruit stacked towards the back end of this Lavaut, the length is really quite impressive.Inc. TAX€326.26 -

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is completely de-stemmed, as the domaine felt that the wine already came with sufficient natural spiciness. It has a very classy bouquet of copious red cherry and raspberry fruit, becoming a little darker with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, impressive symmetry and an elegant finish. This is the kind of wine that is becoming more synonymous with the domaine since their change of modus operandi. Superb.Inc. TAX€115.15 -

Good full medium red. Musky dark raspberry, strawberry, underbrush and crushed rock on the nose, plus hints of pepper, leather and spicy oak. Dense, juicy and penetrating but not at all hard, with strong smoky limestone minerality carrying through to a very long, saline aftertaste featuring serious ripe tannins that turned a bit edgy with air. The wine's saline element is nicely supported by its wild red berry fruit.Inc. TAX€1,663.46 -
Wine Advocate (94-96)
The 2016 Latricieres Chambertin Grand Cru, like the Chapelle-Chambertin, includes around 40% whole bunch fruit. This is incredibly pure on the nose, very focused, brimming full of energy. It foregoes the conservatism and reserve one usually discerns on wines from this vineyard. The palate is medium-bodied, with layers of raspberry coulis and crushed strawberry laced with tobacco and a touch of spice, fanning out gloriously but with style on the finish. Again, it is a step up from the 2015.Inc. TAX€1,802.77 -
Vinous (95)
The 2020 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru was completely de-stemmed this year. This has a complex and delineated bouquet, more complex than the Chapelle-Chambertin and more mineral-driven. The palate is well-balanced with sappy red fruit intermixed with clove, white pepper and sage, while vibrant and spicy on the finish. Excellent - this could be the pick from Drouhin-Laroze this year.Inc. TAX€1,194.94 -

The 2021 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru has a perfumed floral lavender-scented bouquet with a mixture of red and black fruit. It does not quite achieve the focus of Faiveley's Mazis-Chambertin but builds nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, quite saline from the get-go with ample grip. Structured and linear, peppery with an almost feisty finish, I am sure that time will tame this. Excellent. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.Inc. TAX€523.06 -
