The 2018 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru is 100% whole cluster and underwent one of the earliest malolactics, finishing by January 2019. It has a mixture of red and black fruit tinged with brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, the whole cluster so well integrated that you would guess it contained far less. The elegant finish is tinged with bay leaf and white pepper notes. The 2021 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru is 100% whole clusters this year. That obviously comes across on the nose and slightly obscures the terroir expression, but there is just about sufficient fruit. Deep ruby-red. Superripe aromas of crystallized cherry, raspberry, marzipan and dark chocolate. Offers compelling sweetness and density, yet is currently rather unforthcoming in the middle. Still, this is a complete Volnay that combines finesse and power. Finishes very long, with substantial but fine tannins that spread over the entire palate.Inc. TAX€4,737.07 -

Bright, full red. Highly complex, pretty aromas of raspberry and flowers hint at the sweetness of the vintage. Lively, nuanced and deep, with a sappy minerality that would have had me guessing C o te de Nuits. Really resounds on the broad, sweet, very long finish. This has delivered on its early potential and is an outstanding effort for the vintage.Inc. TAX€2,290.09 -
Wine Advocate (90-91)
A strikingly marine and shrimp shell-tinged nose and palate with bright red currant and tart cherry fruit mark the de Montille 2008 Volnay Les Taillepieds, which allies white wine refreshment and minerality to intensely persistent fruit and a sort of turf-meets-surf finish that incorporates metaphorically dark, fungal forest floor shadings. Serving more for head-scratching than head-turning, this intriguing expression of its great site nonetheless incorporates a subtly satiny texture thanks to its ultra-fine tannins, and in the course of the coming 12-15 years one can expect its incipient sensuality to rise to its level of fascinating complexity, and for it to serve adeptly at table.Inc. (100% vendange entier): Medium red. Aromas of redcurrant, tobacco, dusty spices and rose petal. Suave, precise and intense if still youthfully tight; this appears to possess the density and saline extract to support the whole-cluster vinification. Finishes with very fine-grained tannins, a light peppery note and lovely lingering perfume. Excellent potential here.Inc. TAX€1,162.32 -

(100% vendange entier): Good fresh red. Dark cherry and underbrush flavors are accented by peppery spices from the vinification with stems. Supple on entry, then concentrated, dry and uncompromising, with the stem component currently suppressing the wine's underlying fruit and minerality. Firmly built and energetic, but a bit dry following the Champans. Showing more energy than it did from barrel a year ago but the dusty tannins will require patience.Inc. TAX€141.96 -

Bright, dark red. Much riper on the nose than the Beaune Grèves but still with a medicinal aspect to the complex aromas of black cherry, crushed rock and flint. Plush, dense, savory wine with excellent purity and lift, conveying strong mineral cut to the raspberry and redcurrant flavors. There's something Vosne-like in this wine's salinity. The slatey finish features suave, well-integrated tannins; really glistens and rises on the aftertaste. This has turned out very well.Inc. TAX€281.51 -

The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru les Taillepieds, 100% whole cluster with around 30% new oak, offers impressive precision and focus on the nose, lively cranberry, wild strawberry and pomegranate scents combine effortlessly with subtle notes of wet slate. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, beautifully balanced with a crescendo of red fruit, mixed with mineral and spice towards the compelling finish. Deeply pitched, fruit-driven aromas of black raspberry and dark cherry, plus a hint of smoky minerality. Wonderfully plush yet lively, displaying more volume and depth than the Mitans. Lovely silky Volnay without any impression of undue weight. Really fills the mouth and echoes on the finish while maintaining superb vivacity. Like the Mitans, this was made with 100% whole clusters in 2020. Rose petals and a touch of musk scent the nose, followed by a pristine pure palate of mulberries and soft red plums. This cuv e tends to be much firmer than the Mitans, but this year the tannins are unusually streamlined and rounded. The plush fruit's baby fat helps to cushion their usual vigor at this stage.
