(6x75cl) 2021Vinous (91-93)
The 2021 Pommard Les Pezerolles 1er Cru has one of the most attractive aromatics amongst de Montille's reds with lively black plum and mulberry fruit, damp undergrowth and light tobacco scents. The palate is well balanced with fine tannins, taut and focused with a little more fruit on the finish compared to other cuvées. Very fine.Inc. TAX€1,040.87 -

(50% vendange entier; this and the Taillepieds were bottled in May of 2008) Bright, full red. Highly nuanced nose combines redcurrant, tobacco, iron and flint. Quite ripe and rich, with a liqueur-like candied cherry flavor dominating today. Offers the best palate coverage of these wines to this point, finishing with suave but serious tannins and excellent length. This really calls for four or five years of cellaring. Excellent for the vintage.Inc. TAX€178.62 -

The 2011 Pommard Les Rugiens 1er Cru feels clean and pure on the nose, elegant rather than powerful with brambly red berry fruit, undergrowth, chestnut and sage developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied, clean raspberry and wild strawberry with fine tannin all the way to the finish, especially for a Pommard. It fans out with confidence at the end, completing an accomplished Les Rugiens. Tasted at Flint Wines Burgundy 2011 tasting.Inc. TAX€1,445.56 -

(completely destemmed): Healthy deep, bright red. Very expressive, slightly metallic perfume of red berries and iron. Delivers a stimulating combination of sweet, almost candied fruits and penetrating acidity, with an herbal element contributing to the impression of inner-mouth lift. This very savory, intense Rugiens finishes a bit tough; in fact, it went into a shell in the glass.Inc. TAX€1,157.77 -
Vinous (92-94)
(one-third vendange entier; 40% new oak; just racked following a very late malo): Healthy medium red. Compelling aromas and flavors of redcurrant, iron, rose petal and minerals. At once silky and penetrating, with its sweetness perfectly balanced by harmonious acidity. Shows captivating rose petal perfume throughout. The seriously tannic, floral finish displays real length and grip. This wine should age beautifully but even today there's no hardness. The crop was reduced by about 30% due to the frost, noted winemaker Sieve.Inc. TAX€178.13 -

The 2021 Pommard Les Rugiens-Bas 1er Cru has a slightly chalky nose, a mélange of red and black fruit and touches of undergrowth and autumn leaves. The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Champans was fully destemmed this year. I like the definition here, vibrant with red cherry and redcurrant that is beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied and tightly wound. It feels quite masculine with a chalky texture finish; there is good backbone and extraction. Give this 3-4 years so that it becomes less Pommard and more Volnay.Inc. TAX€629.32 -

The 2018 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru includes 50% whole cluster and has a much more floral bouquet than the Mitans, with wilted rose petal percolating through the red fruit. The 2021 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a very attractive bouquet with brambly, red berry fruit, white pepper and sous-bois scents, nicely focused with a subtle garrigues note. Wine Advocate (89-90)
The de Montille 2005 Volnay Mitans displays a lovely nose of ripe cherry and flowers with an iodine mineral-medicinal note that, together with fruit skin tartness, follows on a highly-concentrated, impressively-layered, finely-tannic palate, with raw meat, floral and mineral suggestions dominating over any sweetness of fruit. The tightly wound finish here is smoky, pungent and subtly bitter. In two or three years one would be able to glean a clearer notion of this wine’s ultimate personality.Inc. TAX€1,578.72 -
Vinous (91+)
Good medium red. Captivating aromas of musky cherry, Oriental spices, incense and sexy oak nuances, plus a whiff of soft citrus fruits. Broad, rich and sweet, with good flesh for the vintage leavened by an edge of acidity that will require a year or two to harmonize with the wine. Finishes with building but integrated tannins and a slight youthful toughness.Inc. TAX€184.75 -
(12x75cl) 2009Wine Advocate (94)
The 2009 Volnay Mitans wafts from the glass with sweet scents of mint, dried flowers, tobacco and red cherries. It possesses marvelous depth in a weightless style informed from the use of 100% whole clusters. The 2009 can be enjoyed today or cellared. It is arguably the 2009 that has come together the most over the last six months. This is a great effort from Etienne de Montille. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029+.Inc. TAX€2,041.32 -
Wine Advocate (91-93)
The 2010 Volnay Mitans was made with 100% whole clusters and that comes through loud and clear in the wine’s expressive aromatics. Layers of silky red berries follow as the aromas and flavors take shape. Rose petals, spices and licorice are layered into the sensual, totally beguiling finish. The Mitans needs time for the stems to fully harmonize with the rest of the elements, but there is no denying it is flat-out delicious. This is a great effort from Etienne de Montille. (100% vendange entier; one-third new oak): Healthy dark red. Complex but reticent aromas of kirsch and blueberry lifted by a floral quality. A bit youthfully withdrawn but lively and polished in the mouth, with a floral perfume that's rare for this drought year. Wonderfully classy, refined Volnay with outstanding subtle sweetness and energy and a very long finish featuring utterly suave tannins. A great young Volnay in the making.Inc. TAX€989.74 -

(two-thirds whole clusters; one-third new oak; the sand on top of the limestone here typically yields relatively soft tannins, according to winemaker Brian Sieve): Good dark red. Cool black cherry aroma lifted by a stony quality. A step above the preceding samples in both juiciness and finesse; in fact, a real high-wire act of captivating sweetness and bright acidity. Very fine-grained, serious wine with excellent grip and length. These 45-year-old vines avoided the frost but yielded very little fruit, as they were very sensitive to rain and wind during the flowering.Inc. TAX€755.77 -

Perhaps one of the earlier drinking Volnays. This is very well crafted.Inc. TAX€127.44 -
