Wine Advocate (89)

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. There is a little reduction to bypass on the nose, although underneath this Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Clos des Réas appears to be some attractive cranberry and blackberry/briar scents, with fine tension and nicely integrated oak. The palate is crisp, lithe and silky in the mouth, commencing in harmonious fashion, but becoming a tad hard toward the finish. I am certain that bottle age will tenderize this Vosne-Romanée, but it seems sulky at the moment. I remain optimistic that it will repay 5-6 years in the cellar.

The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has quite an expressive nose, with black cherries, fresh fig and light licorice scents gradually emerging—though its 50% new oak is quite vocal. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, finely balanced with (again) the new oak shaping the mid-palate and finish. There is a good Aux Brûlées here, though you'll have to wait for the oak to be assimilated.

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has a very well defined nose with vivid dark cherry and raspberry fruit, touches of crushed stone and rose petals. Wonderful focus. The palate is medium-bodied with a bit of oak to be subsumed on the entry. Good fruit concentration considering the growing season, quite savoury towards the finish without the length of this Premier Cru's top performers. Yet there is something intriguing about this Aux Brûlée… I will be prudent with my assessment for now.

Providing a quintessential taste of France's Burgundy wine region, the Michel Gros Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Aux Brulees 2020 encapsulates expertise and rich tradition. Birthed from the famous Vosne-Romanée appellation in Côte de Nuits, its vineyards stand testament to superior French viticulture. Carefully hand-selected grapes are respectfully aged in oak barrels for 18 months, granting it a sophisticated, well-structured palate.

Spearheading this mastery is the Michel Gros family, renowned wine-growers since the 19th century. Their adherence to low yield practices gifts this Pinot Noir a concentrated and defined character. A vibrant, deep ruby colour dances in the glass, whilst powerful notes of black cherries, spice, and delicate violet grace the senses. The balance of acidity and tannin, courtesy of the unique terroir, manifests in a lingering, impactful finish.

Endowed with ageing potential, the Michel Gros Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Aux Brulees 2020 serves as an unforgettable addition to any elite wine collection.

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru, matured in 50% new oak, has a well defined black cherry, violet petal and iodine bouquet that feels nicely integrated with the wood. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, gentle grip and a slightly toasted finish. Certainly this is one of Gros’s better wines in 2017.

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées has a reticent bouquet that demanded a lot of coaxing from the glass. It remained a little taciturn with broody blackberry and raspberry scents, confit cherries emerging with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a fine bead of acidity. It clams up a little toward the second half that is driven by the wood tannins at the moment. As I remarked last year apropos the 2015, I wish the new oak would allow the great terroir to have its say.

The 2023 Richebourg Grand Cru takes time to unfold on the nose and never quite reaches the heights of the previous vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with another toasty entry from the 100% new oak. This has fine weight and quite a lot of wood tannins, but it's difficult to discern the vineyard. This is a difficult Richebourg to read at the moment.

5 Star Wine. Fine glowing deep purple. Here there is both depth and class. This is a blend from Aux Communes, ripe fruit, and north facing Barreaux, now assembled and returned to barrel. This works really well together with the plummy ripe notes kept well in check. Very long finish. I think this could be exceptional. Tasted: December 2021.

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Village was a little sullen when I tasted the barrel sample, offering broody black fruit and quite a strong marine influence plus a touch of black olive. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit, quite Morey-like in terms of structure, leading to a more austere finish than some of its peers at the moment. Will need time.

Wine Advocate (88-90)

The 2012 Vosne-Romanee Village comes from two parcels in “Les Barreaux” and “Aux Communes”, the former representing a good 70% of the blend. It is actually one of the last cuvees to be harvested as it is a cool site. It has a tightly wound, slightly laconic bouquet that takes some coaxing from the glass, eventually offering black rather than red tertiary fruit. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, taut red berry fruit with a crisp, chalky structure towards the finish. This will probably need two or three years in bottle to really unfurl.

Bright, deep red. Reticent aromas of black cherry, minerals, menthol and licorice, plus a whiff of meat. Silky and chocolatey; a step up in density from the regular village wine, and more classically dry. This somewhat more muscular wine has the middle-palate stuffing to support its broad, ripe tannins. The village wine will offer early appeal, but this wine will require a few years of patience.

Bright ruby-red. Spicy blackberry and blackcurrant aromas complicated by floral, animal and tarry nuances. Densely packed but bright, with lively acidity and well-defined fruit flavors. Nicely pliant and easygoing. Finishes with ripe tannins and a distinct component of sweet oak. Meo experimented with a bit of reverse osmosis on this cuvee, eliminating about 5% of the water.
