Nuits-St-Georges
-
Vinous (90)
Full medium red. Wild aromas of strawberry and smoke plus a touch of meaty reduction. Fat, sweet and creamy in the middle, showing excellent volume for the year but not the verve or thrust of the Vosne villages. The wine's tannins coat the teeth and dry the sides of the tongue. (This wine was aged in 30% new oak, vs. 15% to 20% for the village wines.) My score assumes that this wine will absorb its oak element with time in the cellar.Inc. TAX€1,061.28 -
Jancis Robinson (17)
Barrel sample. Mid cherry red. Ripe dark damson fruit. Rich but juicily fresh on the palate, a good balance of generosity and lively acidity. Tannins are firm, compact and yet already smoothed. Fills the mouth and finishes long.Inc. TAX€888.48 -

The 2008 Nuits St. Georges Clos de la Marechale offers up black cherries, sweet spices, flowers and licorice, all of which meld together beautifully in a weightless, impeccably elegant style. Floral, minty notes add complexity and nuance on the refined finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020.Inc. TAX€297.73 -
Jancis Robinson (17)
Very charming, pure, intense fruit (more intense and rather riper than usual for this wine) with tannins still a little more evident than I would have expected. Lots of fun and a versatile wine to enjoy with fish main courses.Inc. TAX€4,073.26 -
Vinous (91+)
Plums, tobacco and smoke are some of the notes that inform the 2011 Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos de La Maréchale. Underlying veins of graphite and minerals give the 2011 much of its energy. I very much like the sense of contrasts here. At times, the Clos de La Maréchale is wild, while at others it oozes with polish and sophistication. Clos de La Maréchale remains the hidden jewel in Mugnier's range. Because of its relatively large production, it can often be found in the market at a reasonable price without too much effort.Inc. TAX€1,428.72 -
Wine Advocate (93+)
Mugnier's 2015 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale is a terrific success in the 2015 vintage and is strongly reminiscent of the excellent 2005 rendition, opening in the glass with aromas of creamy cassis, ripe cherry, dark chocolate and grilled squab. On the palate, the wine is deep, full-bodied and sapid, with succulent acids, an ample chassis of rich tannins and excellent length. This is one of the rare cases of a great Burgundy from a great domaine that is available in some volume, and no one should fixate on Mugnier's Chambolles at the expense of this lovely Nuits.Inc. TAX€1,405.68 -
Wine Advocate (93)
Aromas of cassis, dark plums, baking chocolate and rosehip introduce the 2016 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale, a full-bodied, rich and layered wine with a broad-shouldered chassis of fine, stony tannins that are entirely enveloped in fleshy, gourmand fruit. This vintage is atypically rich and concentrated, so it's hard to predict if and when it will shut down.Inc. TAX€1,652.63 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale 1er Cru, which is usually the first to be picked, has a really delightful bouquet, very expressive and displaying fine mineralité. The precise, detailed palate is well balanced, offering mineral tension, a fine line of acidity and a crisp, vibrant finish. Superb.Inc. TAX€971.52 -
(6x75cl) 2010Burghound (92-94)
A fresh but brooding and reticent nose only grudgingly gives up scents of pure essence of black cherry, cassis and earth with the telltale sauvage notes. The rich, supple and impressively deep broad-shouldered flavors possess an abundance of mid-palate concentration as well as plenty of dry extract that largely buffers the notably firm tannic spine on the palate staining and wonderfully long finish. This is a seriously impressive Vaucrains and one that should amply repay extended cellaring.Inc. TAX€903.04 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2011 Nuits St. Georges Les Pruliers is unusually refined and polished for a young Pruliers. Sweet dark cherries, exotic spices, licorice and mint are all layered together beautifully in this silky, polished Burgundy. Medium in body, the Pruliers achieves a rare balance of fruit, acidity and tannin that is remarkable. I imagine the 2011 will drink well relatively early as it is so harmonious, but there is also clearly potential for aging.Inc. TAX€1,501.48 -

The 2014 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Pruliers was much more backward on the nose compared to the 2014 les Roncières when I tasted it at the domaine; this is broody and a bit sulky at the moment. The palate is more expressive with fine, saturated tannin. The new oak is a little more prominent here and will need time to be absorbed, but there is plenty of fruité and density on the finish; plus there is tangible mineralité and indeed, spiciness on the finish that has more concentration than Etienne Grivot's other Nuits-Saint-Georges. Superb.Inc. TAX€880.32 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru has a gorgeous bouquet of generous red berry fruit, Earl Grey, pressed white flowers and just a slight orange blossom aroma. The palate is sweet on the entry, offering vibrant red cherry and strawberry fruit. Mineralité floods through the wine on the persistent finish. Yet another scintillating contribution from this vineyard.Inc. TAX€826.38 -
Burghound (91-93)
As it should, this presently has an entirely different aromatic profile with its ripe and fresh combination of earth and sauvage characters together with both red and dark currant scents. Here too there is really lovely mouth feel to the tautly muscular flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the energetic, detailed and beautifully persistent finish. This is also admirably seamless and should amply reward extended keeping.Inc. TAX€904.32 -
Wine Advocate (93-95)
The 2010 Nuits St. Georges Clos des Forets St.-Georges is striking. Freshly cut flowers, spices and red berries are some of the many notes that are woven together. Though deceptively understated at first, the Forets St-Georges has plenty of underlying Nuits structure. A crystalline, totally pure finish laced with rose petals, spices and licorice wraps around the palate in stunning style. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030.Inc. TAX€201.08 -

Offering up a deep bouquet of cassis, plums, dark chocolate and spices, the 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Forêts St Georges is medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, with a textural attack, melting tannins, ripe acids and a deep core of sapid fruit. The finish is impressively long and nicely defined. Deeper and fleshier than the more ethereal Clos d'Arlot, this will blossom with a little bottle age, but it's sufficiently elegant and expressive to be approachable sooner.Inc. TAX€739.68 -
(3x75cl) 2015Vinous (96)
Tasted next to the Vignerondes, the 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots is quite a bit fleshier. Silky tannins and soft, racy curves give the Boudots much of its distinctive personality. This is a decidedly sumptuous style of Nuits. Although it is naturally an infant, today the Boudots is absolutely stellar. I loved it.Inc. TAX€22,848.37 -

Medium red. Less fruity and more medicinal on the nose than the Vaucrains, offering complex scents of dark raspberry, dried flowers, mocha and earth. Finishes savory and lightly saline, with noteworthy subtle length.Inc. TAX€1,747.68 -

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos Saint-Marc has a complex, quite arresting bouquet with finely tuned dark cherry and raspberry fruit, hints of incense of pressed flowers developing with time. I adore the precision of these aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, notes of blackberry and raspberry preserves, a keen line of acidity and a pleasant touch of bitterness toward the long finish. This is another delightful, beautifully sculpted wine from Rion. Tasted September 2017.Inc. TAX€555.12 -

The 2010 Nuits St. Georges La Richemone Ultra, from a vineyard planted in 1902, is super-finessed and classy. The fruit seems to hover on the palate. The 2012 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Richemoines Cuvee Ultra comes from a small parcel of vines planted back in 1902. It includes 50% whole cluster fruit and there are three barrels this year. It has an enticing bouquet with black cherries, cracked black pepper, tertiary notes and a little undergrowth. The palate has more matiere than the regular cuvee with a fine line of acidity and just a touch more backbone towards the persistent finish. This is very fine and should age well over the next 15 years.Inc. TAX€2,778.72 -

The 2014 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru La Richemoines Cuvée Ultra has a clean and precise, mineral-driven bouquet that is a little austere at the moment, but that will fill out. There is great terroir expression here and real energy. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit on the entry. This is nice structured, grippy in the mouth with good tension. What is needs is a little more flesh to develop towards the finish, as it does come across as very linear and strict at the moment. Let's see how it performs in bottle.Inc. TAX€1,344.72 -
