The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has 100% whole bunch, though stems neatly enmeshed on the nose with hints of blueberry and cassis infusing the red fruit. A little timid at the moment, it will open with bottle age. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, just a little chewiness on the entry. Structured on the finish, this is quite a "serious" Bonnes-Mares that just needs to muster more charm on the finish.Inc. TAX€1,164.23 -

The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has an open nose with clear whole cluster influence, a little stemmy, which becomes accentuated with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a raw entry, quite edgy tannins and a distinct green streak that runs from start to finish. Certainly some underripe fruit and tomato vine notes, though it is still appealing despite all that, perhaps terroir averting potential disaster. Fine. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.Inc. (just two and a half barrels produced; from fruit destemmed by hand): Ruby-red. High-pitched aromas of red fruits, licorice and minerals. Vibrant, very intensely flavored and tightly wound; at once powerful and elegant. Superb building finish features serious tannins that are not at all hard or dry. An extremely young Musigny that will need at least seven or eight years and should be long-lived.Inc. TAX€6,915.66 -

The 2009 Musigny is every bit as fabulous from bottle as it was from barrel. A knock-out bouquet leads to super-ripe, floral infused red berries. The 2009 boasts extraordinary perfume, silky tannins and phenomenal balance. I especially like the understated intensity. This is a breathtaking effort from Pierre Vincent and La Vougeraie. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.Inc. TAX€8,575.68 -
Wine Advocate (95-97)
There are two barrels of the 2016 Musigny Grand Cru, one new and one used, 100% whole bunch. There is much more gusto on the nose compared to the Bonnes-Mares, with upfront, expressive red cherry, wild strawberry and cold stone aromas, later complemented by wilted rose petals and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied, but there is much more body and presence here compared to the Bonnes-Mares: fine tannin, just the right amount of salinité with a complex and sustained finish. There is a nobility about this Musigny, and that is what we expect to find in a bottle. Superb.Inc. TAX€7,303.68 -
Vinous (96)
The 2018 Musigny Grand Cru has a complex nose with evidence of some stem addition here lending an underlying peppery character. You could argue that at this stage it rather obscures the terroir expression, though the whole bunch seems commensurate with the fruit. The palate is crisp and precise, the stems lend a discrete peppery character. Not a powerful Musigny, yet perhaps the most elegant with a sensual kirsch-, liquorice-tinged finish. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.Inc. TAX€2,214.37 -

100% whole bunch vinification. Most of the vines date back to 1928-29 with a few from 1989. Glowing imperial purple. The nose mirrors the majesty. Starts discreetly then swells on the palate. The wine is entirely harmonious with perfectly integrated light touch of acidity. It is very far from being massive but it is a beauty nonetheless.Inc. TAX€647.33 -

Coming from two parcels totaling only 0.2 hectares, this was whole cluster-fermented then aged in 40% new oak. It is seamless. Scents of mulberries and blueberries deliver impressive fruit purity. The spice-laden palate has a luxurious, taffeta-like texture with svelte tannins and elegant acidity. It is so well-knit that it is almost ready to drink now, but it will deliver pleasure for decades to come. 2024-42Inc. TAX€3,942.37 -

The 2021 Musigny Grand Cru clearly has some whole cluster influence, which here is proportional to the fruit concentration. Red cherry and strawberry, cracked black pepper and sage. The palate is medium-bodied with finely sculpted tannins and just a splash of balsamic that infused the red berry fruit, dovetailing into quite a peppery and vibrant finish. Great length. A wine to bunker down in your cellar to resist temptation. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.Inc. TAX€1,192.13 -
