Chambolle-Musigny
Chambolle-Musigny
-
Vinous (90-92)
Bright red with ruby tones. Crushed black fruits and cherry on the nose, lifted by notes of mint, rock and orange zest. Pliant but firm wine with thickness, clarity and lift. Sappy flavors of medicinal dark cherry, spices and red licorice display excellent balance and depth. A strong performance for this cuvée, from a crop that was off by 50% due to the frost. This reminded me of the superb 1993 bottling.Inc. TAX€1,609.68 -
Wine Advocate (90-92)
The 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Châtelots has an open, articulate nose that really expresses its terroir -- such fine mineralité here. The palate is strict and linear with dark berry/blackcurrant fruit, plenty of freshness and with a steely, precise finish that perhaps just needs a little more persistence. That may come by the time it is in bottle, but for now, it is the finesse that comes through in barrel.Inc. TAX€1,038.48 -
(6x75cl) 2014Vinous (93)
Medium red. Sexy oak spices complement aromas of strawberry, rose petal, licorice and earth. Large-scaled, concentrated, creamy and rich; wonderfully generous and layered for the vintage, with its red fruit and spice flavors conveying captivating sweetness. This very young wine finishes with big, ripe tannins and terrific saline persistence. Some day this will be magnificent at the dinner table. It's hard to believe that this fruit was picked with potential alcohol of just 12.3%.Inc. TAX€2,005.68 -
Vinous (90-92)
The 2012 Chambolle-Musigny is a great introduction to the year. Dark cherries, plums and spices jump from the glass in a sensual, expressive Chambolle with tons of near-term appeal. Violets, rose petals and spices all flesh out on the radiant, expressive finish. The 2012 is a bit richer and broader than is normally the case, but there is plenty of vibrancy to balance the intensity of the fruit.Inc. TAX€748.32 -
(6x75cl) 2015Vinous (94-97)
(13.5% alcohol; 30% vendange entier): Dark red-ruby. Wild aromas and flavors of black raspberry, earthy spices and mocha, with an element of menthol freshness providing lift. Round, fat and highly concentrated; boasts outstanding richness and depth but will need extended aging to deliver on its inherent complexity. The crop level here was just 25 hectoliters per hectare, or less than the Chambertins. Most promising today on spicy, rising, edge-free finish, which saturates every square millimeter of the palate with salty minerality and dark fruits. This wonderfully silky, classy Bonnes-Mares is from stony, whiter soil on the Chambolle side of the cru.Inc. TAX€2,512.76 -
(1x75cl) 2017Burghound (95)
Here too the nose is quite restrained with its admirably pure aromas of red cherry, dark currant, spice and earth along with notes of violet and lavender. I very much like the sense of underlying tension to the succulent, indeed even juicy, medium weight plus flavors that exude a subtle salinity on the tautly muscular and firm finish that flashes just a hint of youthful austerity. This isn't quite as complex as the Chambertin but it's close and it may well close the gap over time as this is also very clearly structured for mid to even longer-term keeping.Inc. TAX€631.33 -

Another of the highlights of the range is the 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, a striking wine that soars from the glass with notes of raspberries, red berries, rose petals, sweet spices, violets and forest floor. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with striking cut and definition, concluding with a long, mineral finish. This is an exquisitely refined Bonnes-Mares that is worth a special effort to seek out.Inc. TAX€727.99 -

The 2019 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is beautiful, mingling notions of red plums and raspberries with hints of rose petals, orange rind and warm spices, framed by a deft application of new oak. Medium to full-bodied, bright and concentrated, it has lively acids, ripe tannins and a long, elegantly chalky finish. Fine-boned and vibrant, this has turned out very well indeed.Inc. TAX€475.15 -

The 2021 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is another attractive wine in this range from Boillot. Medium in body and nicely lifted, the Bonnes Mares has plenty of energy, if not quite the depth or textural resonance of the very best years. This is a decidedly small-scaled Bonnes Mares. - Antonio GalloniInc. TAX€1,472.26 -

The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny Les Bussières includes a small proportion of whole bunch fruit. It has a harmonious bouquet with red cherries and pomegranate aromas. I appreciate the definition and precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp and crunchy red berry fruit, very natural in style, pure and tensile with a dash of spice on the finish. This should give ten years of pleasure, possibly more.Inc. TAX€1,622.36 -

(3x75cl) 2020Vinous (93-95)
The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak, has a precocious bouquet with layers of opulent blackberry, cassis and redcurrant fruit, crushed violets bursting from the glass. This does not hold back. The palate is sweet and velvety smooth on the entry, fine tannins that frame the intense black cherry and cassis fruit with a judicious touch of spice towards the finish. Afford this 5-7 years in the cellar to tame its precocity.Inc. TAX€1,548.84 -
(3x75cl) 2021Vinous - Neal Martin (92)
The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is clearly darker in colour than its peers. It offers more fruit concentration and opulence on the nose—a rare facet in this growing season—with inky purple fruit and a floral component that emerges with time. The palate is sweeter and more fruit driven than its peers, with blackberry, blueberry and a light cassis note, though it does not have the complexity or terroir expression of its peers. It feels as if it is trying too hard. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.Inc. TAX€1,597.45 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2022 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru comprises two barrels, one new and one a year old. It has quite a backward nose, more tertiary in style, quite flinty, in fact. Blind, I would not guess this to be from this vineyard at all. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe black cherry and boysenberry fruit, fine mineralité and backbone. This is much more open, fanning out with style towards the finish that has just the right amount of edge. It's very fine but will require bottle age to unlock the aromatics.Inc. TAX€1,346.26 -
Burghound (92-94)
(from a .123 ha parcel of 80+ year old vines situated mostly in terres blanches; about 600 bottles are produced each year). A discreet application of oak frames the overtly spice aromas of poached plum, dark cherry and violet. The rich, solidly concentrated and weighty larger-bodied flavors are at once supple yet powerful with a taut muscularity, all wrapped in a wonderfully persistent and complex finale where the only nit is a touch of warmth. In the context of the 2023 vintage, this is a big wine and one that will need at least moderate patience.Inc. TAX€1,424.26 -

The 2013 Chambolle-Musigny Village, which is matured in 20% new oak, has a very harmonious and quite intense bouquet with pure raspberry and wild strawberry scents unfurling. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin: crisp dark berry fruit with black plum and a dash of black spice on the finish. There is impressive length here for a village cru that is compact but focused.Inc. TAX€785.66 -

(1x75cl) 1997Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (87-89)
Less saturated red. Deeper pitched, briary aromas of blueberry, tar, mocha and strawberry jam. Fat, lush and velvety; the sweetest '97 to this point, but a bit low in acid and high in alcohol. The Amoureuses is finer and more complex.Inc. TAX€2,464.75 -
(1x75cl) 1999Vinous (90+)
Bright full red. Very ripe, expressive aromas of roasted strawberry, mocha, cocoa powder and pepper. Lush, silky and fat; a very rich, dense Bonnes-Mares with a Bordeaux-like texture and lovely harmonious acidity. Doesn't offer the charm of Chambolle but this very solid wine has a strong tannic backbone for aging.Inc. TAX€3,088.13 -

Black fruits, tar, coffee and mocha on the nose; a bit less vibrant than the Chambolle examples. Big, rich, oaky and velvety, but still closed in the middle. Notes of earth, stone and herbs. Finishes with substantial, broad tannins.Inc. TAX€1,822.75 -

Good medium red. Complex, pure nose combines black raspberry, blackberry, herbs, mocha, licorice and rose petal. Very tightly wound today, even a bit lean, and hiding more than itÂ’s showing. Highly perfumed flavors of blackberry, licorice and fresh herbs. Finishes with very firm tannins and excellent length. Less sweet than the Chambolle samples, yet harmonious from the outset. I may be underrating this. Half of these vines were replanted in 1987, as Mugnier replaced a large-berried, thin-skinned clone that was particularly sensitive to rot.Inc. TAX€2,894.22 -
(6x75cl) 2003Vinous (90)
The 2003 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has an attractive bouquet of red berry fruit, hoisin, undergrowth and very light peppermint aromas that is fresher than many of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a lactic, chocolaty entry. It is missing the cohesion one usually finds with this cru, although there is good depth and a smudged, cocoa-tinged finish that comes across like a guilty pleasure. (from a blend of 60% white and 40% red soil, says Mugnier) Bright, medium red. Perfumed nose of blueberry, mocha and crushed stone. Plush on entry, then wonderfully fresh in the middle and less plump than the Fuees, with terrific stony verve and mineral intensity to the crushed black fruit flavors. Very broad on the back end. This will rely more on its serious tannins than on its acids for longevity-and it will require at least 10 to 12 years of cellaring.Inc. TAX€1,414.62 -
