Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Burghound (94)(from a 1.75 ha parcel of vines averaging 40+ years of age). A cool, elegant and airy nose reflects notes of both red and blue pinot fruit, exotic tea and plenty of floral whiffs, particularly violet and lavender. The sleek and sophisticated medium weight flavors exude an almost palpable minerality as the mouthfeel is akin to rolling tiny pebbles around the mouth, all wrapped into dusty, palate soaking and beautifully long finale. This is outstanding though a wine that will need at least some patience. |

Burghound (93)(a 2.59 ha monopole of the domaine). A more deeply pitched and noticeably riper nose is comprised by notes of poached plum, newly turned earth and a floral top note. The exceptionally rich and very generously proportioned medium-bodied flavors possess a suave mid-palate mouthfeel that contrasts moderately with the strikingly long finale that is both slightly austere and rustic but already impressively complex. This firm and serious effort is one of the better vintages for the Clos de la Bussière in a while and well-worth your interest. |

Burghound (95)(from a .54 ha parcel that is now controlled 100% by the domaine). An exuberantly floralsuffused nose is also cool, pure and airy with its ripe aromas of the essence of wild red currant and truffle hints. The supersleek, intense and chiseled middleweight flavors are almost as mineral-driven as the Les Cras though with more power on the youthfully austere and hugely persistent finish. This is superb and highly recommended. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (94)The 2022 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru has more overt tropical fruit on the nose compared to its peers, with just a patina of oak to be absorbed and a faint pine needle scent cropping up in the background. The palate is slightly reductive on the entry. Fine acidity, though it needs a little more complexity and finesse towards the finish. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. |
