Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)A fascinating plot worked by horse and hand, as they cannot get access with the tractor. Super sensual yet with total finesse, a depth of fruit, a feeling of royalty in the quality, a little touch of quality pepper at the finish but it is evidently the vineyard speaking. Still needs to harmonise further, but this is very fine. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits-Monts 1er Cru has a taut, focused bouquet of black cherries and wild strawberry fruit, with a slight flintiness in the background. Very fine delineation here. The medium-bodied palate has a concentrated opening, fleshy and vibrant with blood orange-infused blueberry and raspberry fruit, then quite strict and peppery towards the finish. This represents a sterling follow-up to the impressive 2021 last year. |

Vinous (86-88)The 2022 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Rouge has a relatively light but fresh bouquet with slightly darker fruit than other Hautes-Côtes I tasted. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit and fine body, given its class, with a confit-like finish. This should be delicious. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (92)The 2022 Chablis Les Lys 1er Cru has a fresh nose with touches of wet pavement and apple blossom, gently unfolding in the glass whilst never squeezing the accelerator too hard. The palate is fresh and crisp with a keen line of acidity. Bright and lively, I admire the linearity and precision of this Chablis, its composure in the final, briny furlongs. Well worth seeking out. Bottled under Diam 5. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. |

Burghound (92)(65+ year old vines near Solutré that face northeast). Here there is no reduction, in fact the nose is quite elegant and airy with its ripe and overtly floral-suffused aromas of citrus confit, spice and discreet oak influence. The larger-bodied flavors are rich to the point of opulence, indeed they are almost viscous while coating the palate on the powerful, robust and beautifully long finale. This is not refined though it’s not rustic either while possessing evident aging potential. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (96)The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Blanchots Dessus 1er Cru displays more reduction on the nose than its peers, though there is plenty of substance behind it: scents of wild peach, lanolin, beeswax and a light sea spray. The palate is beautifully balanced with a silver thread of acidity. Poised, generous, somehow "carefree" in style, this is so harmonious and detailed on the finish that it is impossible to resist returning for more. Wonderful. Bottled under Diam 30 Origine.
