Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

The 2023 Pernand-Vergelesses Blanc Île de Vergelesses 1er Cru comes from a parcel planted in the 1980s by Nadine de Nicolay toward the top of the hill. This has plenty of fresh Conference pear and white peachy scents on the nose, well defined and quite generous. The palate has a rounded texture and is slightly lower in acidity compared to other vintages. Pear and nectarine emerge toward the finish. Very seductive. In Bond€613.00 -

5 Star Wines A beautiful full fresh purple. The nose is exquisite even in the large-scale eyes of the vintage. This is a luxurious and noble Beaune with very good acidity. The deep, dark raspberry fruit absolutely fills the palate, the tannins still need to refine with the second half of the elevage but the finish promises a very fine wine. Drink from 2030-2038. This delicious white Corton has an almost Montrachet-like richness and depth of flavour, with its aromas of ripe apple, quince, cream and spice. The texture is luxurious, almost decadent, but the balanced acidity and extract carry it to an alluringly long finish. The domaine owns 0.65 hectares down the slope from Le Rognet et Corton in Ladoix that face due east; the grapes are carefully sorted, pressed as whole clusters, and fermented in cask (one-quarter new). This wine should open nicely in five years and will drink well for a further 20.In Bond€537.00 -

An even fuller yellow and an even more luxuriant nose, as Clos des Mouches cannot help. I still haven’t understood just why this vineyard should make such opulent, creamily textured wines. The oak is for me just a little bit too present but it should sort itself out after a light bentonite fining and filtering. Good acidity. Plenty of wine to work with here! Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond€505.00 -

A fine bright purple. Concentrated raspberry with a bit of strawberry. There is a more graceful rounded character to the fruit here, a certain succulence into which the oak blends very well. This has a fine sense of harmony and will make an agreeable bottle in the not too distant future. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond€390.00 -

Mid yellow. The Folatières shows depth of fruit more than the floral side of Puligny. The palate offers several layers of fruit, ripe apple though with a crunchy side, and a light citrus. Overall, this makes a fine and substantial Folatières. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond€554.00 -
