Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92)Pale lemon colour. Just a little bit smoky yet pleasingly marine as well. Very crunchy saline finish, 2022 is more classic for Vaillons than 2023. White fruit with the lightest of saline lemon rinses. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted Jul 2024. |

Burghound (91)(from 4 different parcels of 35+ year old vines). Here the wood is subtle though easily perceptible on the mildly exotic aromas of white and yellow peach, orange peel and moderate Chablis elements. On the palate the larger-bodied and more concentrated flavors are also generously proportioned while concluding in a balanced, dry and powerful finish. This could use more depth so a few years of keeping should again prove beneficial. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94)5 Star Wine. An even lemon yellow. The concentrated warmth of Montée de Tonnerre is showing here in a very attractive way, a little more compelling than Mont de Milieu. Less flamboyant up front then the 2023 but if anything offering greater intensity behind with really well harnessed marine minerals. Beautiful persistence. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted Jul 2024. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94)Lemony colour. A touch of the wet wool reduction, more usual on a wine with greater age, but not in itself suggesting evolution. This wet wool aromatic is really just a sulphur compound, I believe. Then very spicy behind with a raft of white fruit energy and good acidity. Hangs on in well, plenty of latent concentration, just closed at the moment. Drink from 2028-2038. Tasted Jul 2024. |

Burghound (89)(from 2 parcels situated in the village of Bas de Chapelot raised in 25 to 30% five+ year old wood). A discreet dollop of wood sets off a similar set of aromas that offer a hint of wet stone. The mouthfeel of the medium weight flavors is also sleek and vibrant with a slightly finer texture that carries over to the balanced, youthfully austere and slightly more compact finale. This is very good for its level and worth considering. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (94)The 2022 Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru has a lot of reduction on the nose—walnut, hazelnut and linseed oil—maybe slightly later picked than its peers. The palate is well balanced with a slightly viscous entry. A powerful Meursault, but it has the depth and concentration you expect from this particular vineyard, spicy with stem ginger and lemongrass on the finish. Not for the faint-hearted, but whenever has Burgundy been for the faint-hearted? Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (91)The 2022 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru has quite a reductive nose and at the moment this is detracting from its sense of place. The palate is a little bitter on the entry, with sour lemon and orange rind, slightly honeyed on the second half, but there is a slight shrillness to this Perrières that is distracting. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. |

Bitouzet Prieur Volnay 1er Cru Pitures 2022 is a finely wrought red from France’s Burgundy, in the Volnay sub-region, crafted by Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur, one of the commune’s quietly exacting, family-run addresses. Drawn from the Premier Cru Pitures, it expresses Volnay’s hallmark poise through Pinot Noir: scented, detailed and built more on line than sheer weight. In the cellar, the domaine is known for traditional Burgundian élevage that privileges purity of fruit and transparent terroir articulation, using measured oak to frame rather than dominate. The 2022 vintage delivers a supple, polished texture with vivid red-berry perfume, savoury nuance and a long, mineral-inflected finish. Decant for aromatic lift in youth, or cellar to allow the tannins to knit and the bouquet to broaden into classic Volnay complexity. |

Bitouzet Prieur Volnay 2022 is a refined red Burgundy from France, rooted in the silken, limestone-influenced slopes of Volnay. Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur is a long-established, family-run address, widely recognised by leading Burgundy commentators for its precise, terroir-faithful Pinot Noir and its measured use of oak. In 2022, the wine captures Volnay’s hallmark tension between perfume and structure: bright red-berry fruit, rose petal and subtle spice, framed by fine, powdery tannins and a cool, mineral line. The élevage is discreet, supporting detail rather than dominating it, with the focus kept firmly on clarity and balance. Already expressive, it has the depth and harmony to reward short cellaring, then unfold further complexity with time in bottle. |
