Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Arnaud Ente's 2022 Bourgogne Chardonnay is a charming rendition that has turned out nicely, opening in the glass with aromas of pear, freshly baked bread and lemon peel. The wine is medium- to full-bodied, ample and textural, laden with ripe yet vibrant acids, and it concludes with a precise, chalky finish. As ever, the Bourgogne Chardonnay is derived from four parcels—two older-vine plots in Puligny-Montrachet and two young-vine sites in Meursault—harvested and vinified separately before blending after their year in glass.

Outstanding. Smoky aromas include those of apple, pear, acacia, anise, exotic tea and a similarly subtle touch of wood influence. There is again excellent size, weight and mid-palate density to the more refined yet overtly powerful medium weight plus flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract on the hugely long, balanced and classy finish. Once again, this is quite simply superb and a premier cru that delivers grand cru quality.

Wine Advocate (92)

Vinified uniquely this year in equal parts wood—an old 14-hectoliter foudre—and glass wine globes, while the rest of the domaine’s wines are matured entirely in glass, the 2022 Meursault Village unfurls in the glass with aromas of jasmine, nashi pear and lime peel, with a faint touch of passion fruit. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, racy and precise, with an expressive core of fruit, bright acids and a long, persistent finish. As readers will know, it derives from two lieux-dits: En l'Ormeau on the plain—a vineyard situated next to the restaurant Au Fil du Clos—and Les Casse-Têtes on the hillside, where the soils contain less clay.

Wine Advocate (93)

The 2022 Meursault Clos des Ambres, from a plot within the En l'Ormeau lieu-dit adjacent to the restaurant Au Fil du Clos, has turned out beautifully, offering a deep bouquet of white peach, Anjou pear, orange peel and freshly baked bread. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, ample and elegantly muscular, presenting itself as somewhat deeper than the regular village bottling—a result attributable to its clay-rich soils and older vines, the majority of which were planted in 1952. With a concentrated core of fruit underpinned by tangy acids, it concludes with a long, saline finish.

Wine Advocate (96)

The 2022 Meursault La Sève du Clos is produced from vines planted in the years immediately following phylloxera—after 1878—in the central sector of the En l’Ormeau vineyard. Now roughly 140 years old, these vines constitute the oldest plant material, to my knowledge, in Meursault. Opening in the glass with a deep bouquet of orange oil, Anjou pear, yellow peach and apricot, the wine is full-bodied, ample and textural, possessing impressive concentration and remarkable mid-palate amplitude and a layered core of fruit that’s structured around a racy spine of acidity, concluding with a long, persistent finish. This is another superb rendition of La Sève du Clos.

Burghound (93)

Outstanding. A subtly exotic nose of jasmine tea, petrol, apple, spiced pear and cool acacia blossom nuances. The mouthfeel of the medium weight flavors is finer still that manage to be at once powerful yet refined while exuding a bead of minerality on the lightly austere bitter citrus-inflected finale. This is a knockout, especially for its level, and highly recommended.

The Arnaud et Sophie Sirugue-Noellat Vosne-Romanee Les Barreaux 2022 exemplifies the quintessential elegance of the Côte de Nuits region. Crafted meticulously by Arnaud and Sophie Sirugue-Noellat, this wine hails from their esteemed Les Barreaux vineyard in Vosne-Romanee, where terroir-driven viticulture is paramount. Hand-harvested Pinot Noir grapes undergo a gentle fermentation process in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, preserving the delicate aromatic profile. The wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, imparting subtle nuances of vanilla and spice without overpowering its inherent finesse. The 2022 vintage showcases vibrant red fruit flavours, balanced acidity, and a silky tannic structure, culminating in a long, harmonious finish. Esteemed by critics and connoisseurs alike, this Vosne-Romanee stands as a testament to Arnaud et Sophie Sirugue-Noellat’s unwavering commitment to excellence and tradition in fine winemaking.
