Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)Mid crimson to purple, with some reduction on the nose. A concentrated dark raspberry fruit, still with this reductive element. If and when that clears there is a fine long finish to look forward to instead. Impressive fruit in the end, so scored on the asu, mption that the reduction will clear. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (97)In bottle. Made as three cuvees, then assembled. A rich mid purple with a deliciously heady bouquet, the sumptuous side of dark raspberry, perfumed yet precise, purple fruit with some redder layers beneath, a little white pepper spice, multiple layers of fruit, very engaging with just a very slight youthful bitterness. Irreproachable. Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted: November 2023. |

Burghound (95)(from younger Musigny vines of less than 25 years of age, the youngest of which were planted in 2007; Lupatelli noted that because so few vines are now less than 25 years of age, the surface area is only about .27 ha and situated in Grands Musigny). This is also exceptionally spicy and very pretty with its perfumed nose of red currant, sandalwood, star anise and an equally broad array of floral elements. Once again the mouthfeel of the medium-bodied flavors is super-sleek thanks to the strikingly fine-grained tannins shaping the superbly persistent, balanced and youthfully austere finish. This is at once powerful and serious and I was stunned at the quality delivered from by the young vines. An indisputable knockout, not to mention it’s very classy. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)Planned to pull out 30% of the holding, but in the end 40% made more sense. So there is just 60% left of old virused vines. Hence only 3.5 barrels. Bright mid purple. The bouquet has a delicious, lifted, velvety red fruit. Floral and seductive, entirely red fruit, nothing black, so not too ripe, and with abundant energy. Fresh and even slightly peppery at the finish. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023. |

Burghound (96)A perfumed if restrained and cool nose reflects super-fresh and floral-inflected aromas of exceptionally spicy red currant, rose petal, violet, poached plum and exotic pekoe tea. There is a highly refined mouthfeel to the almost lacy middle weight flavors that possess that rare sense of class on the balanced and wonderfully persistent if youthfully austere finish. While perhaps not a candidate for one of the all-time great vintages of La Romanée, this is seriously good all the same and clearly at another level compared to all of the prior wines, excellent though they may be. |

The Comte Senard Corton Grand Cru Clos des Meix 2022 epitomises Burgundy's esteemed heritage. Harvested from the legendary Clos des Meix vineyard, this Grand Cru Pinot Noir hails from the heart of Corton, renowned for its terroir-rich expressions. Under the meticulous stewardship of the Comte Senard family, each grape is handpicked to ensure optimal ripeness and purity. Fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, followed by ageing in a selection of French oak barrels, this vintage displays complexity and finesse. On the palate, it reveals layers of dark cherry, raspberry, and subtle earthy undertones, complemented by a silky tannic structure and a lingering finish. The 2022 vintage benefits from a favourable climate, enhancing its vibrant acidity and balanced elegance. A testament to Comte Senard's dedication, this wine is a distinguished addition to any connoisseur's collection. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (91)The 2022 Meursault Bouchères 1er Cru has a slightly more obvious bouquet than the preceding Les Poruzots from Comtes Lafon: apricot and pineapple scents, pure fruit, though I would like to see more minéralité and terroir expression. The palate is ripe and generous on the entry, with more obvious tropical tones, lower acidity and a "sunny" finish. Quite seductive and thoroughly enjoyable, but it misses the intellect of the finest in this flight. Bottled under Diam 30 Origine. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. |

Wine Advocate (95)The 2022 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes showed very well from barrel, and it's just as good in bottle. Wafting from the glass with notes of pear, waxy citrus rind, white flowers, freshly baked bread and honeycomb, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and concentrated, with an elegantly muscular profile and a long, precise finish. |
