Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

The 2022 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is taut and mineral, unwinding in the glass with a typically brooding bouquet of dark berries and plums mingled with hints of rose petals, spices, burning embers and beetroot. The 2022 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru is no more structured than the Charmes-Chambertin this year, reflecting this cuvée's evolution towards greater suavity. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of red berries, rose petals, orange zest, sweet spices and smoke, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with a deep core of fruit, lively acids and plenty of sweet, powdery tannin. In Bond€1,921.00 -

Derived almost exclusively from lieu-dit Les Draze, the 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Village wafts from the glass with aromas of red berries, cherries, rose petals and baking spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and pure, with a concentrated core of fruit framed by sweet tannins, it's showing especially well.In Bond€1,182.27 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)
Rich dense purple. Gorgeously attractive if a little more restrained than the Clos St-Denis. Some of the traditional blueberry. So much in reserve. I prefer the weave of the texture here especially if keeping for the longer term. On the cusp of red and black fruit at the finish, and with excellent persistence. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond€565.00 -

A fresh and vibrant purple. 100% whole cluster. A sort of brioche reduction. Then it really develops on the palate, with a lifted vibrant red fruit, mainly raspberry, still some tannins behind, though the fruit covers them very nicely. Medium persistence. I can see Jeremy’s 2002 comparison for this wine. Drink from 2032-2040.In Bond€1,191.72 -
