Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

The 2022 Meursault Village is lovely, unfurling in the glass with notes of citrus and crisp stone fruit mingled with white flowers, fresh hazelnuts and crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, with terrific density and cut, its satiny attack segues into a layered, structured mid-palate, concluding with a discreetly oak-inflected finish. This vintage should offer a comparatively broad drinking window. In Bond€785.00 -

As ever, the 2022 Meursault Les Chevalières is almost the stylistic mirror image of the Rougeots, even though the parcels are neighbors (the soil and exposition, however, are different). Unwinding in the glass with notes of citrus oil, crisp Anjou pear, white flowers, praline and freshly baked bread, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and racy, with a chiseled, intensely mineral profile and a mouthwateringly saline finish. In Bond€1,190.39 -

The 2022 Meursault (Rouge) has a perfumed bouquet that's more floral with extra red fruit tones and Pinot Noir DNA compared to the Auxey-Duresses. This has fine delineation. The palate is crisp on the entry with crunchy red fruit, fine mineralité and a vivid, graphite-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. This is a classy red Meursault with fine length. In Bond€1,198.06 -

The usual blend of Taillepieds and Clos des Chênes, from a parcel that straddles the border of the two climats, Coche's 2022 Volnay 1er Cru offers up aromas of sweet berries, cherries, peonies and vine smoke, followed by a medium to full-bodied, pure and fleshy palate that's bright, lively and precise. In Bond€1,206.43 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91)
A similar bright fresh purple, with just a little more fruit weight on the palate. A little bit plusher in texture than the village Auxey, but still with notable acidity behind. A crunchy energy alongside the darker fruit. Drink from 2028-2032. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond€97.00
