Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Wine Advocate (97-99)My allegiance chez Dugat is almost always to the Griotte-Chambertin, but this year, it was the 2022 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru that dominated in our tasting. Soaring from the glass with an incipiently complex bouquet of sweet berries, cherries and plums mingled with licorice and smoke, it's full-bodied, velvety and multidimensional, with a deep core of rich, vibrant, concentrated fruit framed by beautifully refined tannins, concluding with a long, saline finish. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96)The 2022 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is missing the same cohesion and presence as the Latricières at the moment, though it has an attractive rose bush/potpourri scent that emerges with time. The medium-bodied palate has a tad more angularity than the Latricières and fine mineralité, edgy and linear with a strict, tensile, lightly spiced finish. What you might term a "grower", aloof, but the sapidity draws you back. Excellent. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)(5 Star Wine) Medium deep purple. The bouquet offers great promise, not flamboyant, a savoury red fruit but with depth behind. Nothing on the nose to say this is a stunning wine but just wait till you put it into your mouth! Such an explosion of rich ripe red fruited pinot, with a plush velvet texture which covers the tannins which are surely there for the long term future. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-99)45% whole bunch vinification, 7 new out of 9 barrels. A fine red to crimson colour. The nose is less flamboyant than the Mazoyères yet with serious intent. This is solid with an iron rich blood orange tang, then a dark strawberry fruit behind, a firmer backbone – showing clearly how well this wine will age. A magical Mazis-Chambertin with excellent length. Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted: December 2023. |
