Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

A fresh raspberry strawberry nose after one of the lighter colours. Much broader on the palate with an impressive density here, strawberry and cherry, evenly balanced with finesse as well. All is there in quite a refined style. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond€339.00 -

Not especially deep in colour, but the nose is rather fine, the elegance of Volnay, less demonstrative on the palate, with medium intensity of the strawberry, cherry fruit. Fair length. A wine of finesse rather than power. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted: November 2023.In Bond€339.00 -

A fuller ruby purple, fully ripe, juicy red fruit, more substantial than Couchereaux, a fine fresh acidity and fewer tannins. Boucherottes achieves generosity while retaining precision. Lovely. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond€243.00 -

(5 Star Wine) Fresh purple of medium depth. Much the liveliest bouquet with its concentration of raspberries, very complete and absolutely delicious. The finish continues gorgeously, this will make a beautiful bottle with a little patience. This Clos des Ursules shows the classic peacock’s fantail of aromatics. In Bond€1,154.77 -

The 2022 Beaune Grèves le Clos Blanc 1er Cru follows up its impressive showing last year. There’s wonderful purity on the nose with yellow plum, meringue and wisps of candy floss, yet underneath, you can feel the terroir expression that will come through with time. The palate is very well-balanced with a fine silver bead of acidity. One of the most tensile and energetic of Jadot's whites, with Conference pear and gooseberry popping up on the finish. This will be fascinating to watch age in bottleIn Bond€341.00 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (88-91)
An attractive fresh mid purple. I am not finding much on the nose at first, just a nutty note mixed in with the fruit perhaps. The Theurons is well balanced on the palate, a medium density of fruit, rather more structure behind. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond€243.00 -

Medium deep crimson. The nose is very forthcoming, quite Chambolle in style which is not always the case with Baudes. On the palate one can find a bit more of the wilder more structured aspect of the proximity to Morey. A mix of fresher and darker red fruit, some tannins to finish. Drink from 2030-2036. The 2022 Marsannay Clos du Roy is one of the most backward reds from Jadot in barrel, but I managed to eke out some attractive raspberry, crushed strawberry and sous-bois aromas that look promising. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, well-judged acidity and a surprisingly dense finish just needing to forage a little more mineralité. Good potential, but it will require 3 or 4 yearIn Bond€150.00 -

The 2022 Beaune Cras 1er Cru was more reduced than the preceding Beaune Grèves and demands more coaxing: darker fruit and a light marine influence at play, but it will need time. The palate is medium-bodied and more muscular than the Grèves. Impressive depth and grip, quite bold towards the finish if missing the same sense of panache. In Bond€1,154.77 -

A fuller yellow, with a softer nose, almost buttery, rather attractive. This is quite gentle at the front of the palate, gains in weight further behind, with a mix of light acidity and slight youthful bitterness. The Beaune Bressandes Blanc remains a discreet wine but attractive. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond€300.00 -

The 2022 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is well-defined on the nose, with a mélange of red and blueberry fruit, crushed violet and light iris flower scents. This is going to be very seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and layers of mineral-rich red fruit counterbalanced by a perfectly judged line of acidity. It discretely fans out on the finish and feels tender despite the power here.In Bond€1,361.00 -

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru showed more reduction on the nose compared to the Bonnes-Mares: brambly red fruit, Earl Grey, and light forest floor aromas blossom in the glass. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with plush tannins, velvety smooth with maraschino cherries, marmalade and touches of fresh fig. This is quite exotic towards the finish. By direct comparison, the aforementioned Grand Cru has a little more composure and restraint and perhaps handled the warmth of the growing season better. Still, it's a lovely Amoureuses. In Bond€1,108.00 -

Frédéric Barnier notes that Fuées does not suffer in the dry years whereas the clay in Baudes can block the water supply. A clear pure crimson purple. The nose has charm and elegance with fruit on the palate better balanced than Baudes. It is not a hugely demonstrative wine, but there is a coherent elegance throughout. Drink from 2030-2037. The 2022 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a perfumed, very floral bouquet with wilted rose petals and touches of lavender, complementing the vivacious red fruit. It is an archetypal Echézeaux. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and a fine bead of acidity. It’s quite peppery towards the finish, so you might misconstrue it as containing some whole bunches. Very satisfying complexity on the finish; this is an excellent Eche.In Bond€802.00 -

A mid ruby crimson colour. There is a greater depth of pure red strawberry/raspberry fruit with a suggestion of some grip. Definitely enough structure behind but this is still fruit forward. Very nicely made. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond€150.00 -

No deeper in colour than its stable mates but broader in bouquet, offering a fleshy white fruit. The balance here is impeccable on the palate, with fine acidity behind that supports the generosity of fruit. A good example. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond€266.00 -

A little more power to the nose ahead of its stablemates Charmes and Genevrières, indeed much more backward. The talent of Perrières is to have this enormous weight of fruit while delivering also a crystalline minerality. This has an impressively broad density of fruit behind, the detail not yet being expressed. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond€306.00 -

Pale in colour, the nose displaying a slight green hazelnut reduction which is not at all unpleasant. Indeed, it adds tension to the wine. There is impressive weight on the palate, some concentrated plum and greengage, good acidity. This still needs more elevage but shows promise. Drink from 2028-2035.
