Burgundy 2021 En Primeur
Our annual trip to the Cote d’Or to taste the new vintage is always a highlight of the year. This year felt extra special as travel restrictions that had kept us stuck at home were finally lifted. The 2021 was a reasonably brutal year in Burgundy, with numerous issues that have sadly hammered the production size significantly.
Plainly, 2021 will be a varied vintage and generalising it will be a difficult thing to do. Still, there are indeed some exceptional Pinot and Chardonnay examples that have triumphed over the dramatic vintage. Despite the challenges imposed by the weather, these wines saw a remarkable comeback to the classical style, with very moderate alcohol levels falling between 12.5 to 13.2%.
Careful selection is required for this vintage, and our buying team is pleased to provide more details and insider tips after a fruitful tasting week at Burgundy. Stay closely with us on this exciting campaign!

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)From the Puligny side of the appellation. Clear beautiful yellow colour. The nose is discreet but very classy, then this huge wealth of fruit expands across the palate. We can wait for the nose. This is beautifully poised, a little wood, a slight youthful bitterness, but both add to the grip. Long and fine. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2022 |

Vinous (93-95)The 2021 Chambertin Grand Cru offers a touch more complexity and nuance than the Clos-de-Bèze with red berry fruit, orange rind, crushed stone and wilted rose petals. It's a little more delineated and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, again, quite creamy in texture with a bit of new oak on the finish (though there is a prudent use of new wood - one new barrel out of three). Quite seductive, this should age well in bottle, though afford it four to five years at least. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)Due to the small market, the 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru is a blend of Poissenot, Les Cazetiers, Combe Aux Moins and Lavaux Saint-Jacques. This still amounted to just three casks! It has a well-defined, fragrant and floral bouquet that blossoms in the glass with hints of orange rind in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine-boned structure. It's well-balanced and focused with a very harmonious and poised finish. Blending these vineyards together was the logical decision, but it has resulted in quite a wonderful wine. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)A fuller purple, showing an exuberant cherry raspberry fruit, with energy behind, and a little thread of acidity. From barrel, this stands head and shoulders above its neighbours. A touch of strawberry too in the long, satisfying finish. Drink from 2026-2032. |

Vinous (86-88)The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny la Combe d'Orveaux has a lovely bouquet with vibrant red fruit, crushed stone and pressed flowers. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly hard tannins on the entry, but this will soften. Steely finish. A bit standoffish at the moment. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2021 Clos de Vougeot le Grand Maupertui Grand Cru has an earthier bouquet with touches of wild mint percolating through the transparent red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded tannins, velvety smooth, moderate depth though not a complex finish. Yet it is surfeit with charm and like the Echézeaux, will not need an enormous amount of cellaring. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2021 Echézeaux Les Loachausses Grand Cru is understated and well-defined on the nose: brambly red fruit and crushed stone, touches of pressed flower. Again, this has a transparence that I admire. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, elegant and poised, gently building towards a cohesive, harmonious finish. Nicely poised and whilst not built for long-term ageing, it will dish out mid-term pleasure. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2021 Richebourg Grand Cru has a beautifully-defined bouquet, dark berries with lots of undergrowth, light shaved black truffle aromas. The mineralité shines through here. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, crisp and quite linear for a Richebourg. Though not persistent as recent vintages, it maintains superb focus with a residual white pepper tinged aftertaste. Excellent. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Les Barreaux offers dark berry fruit on the nose, a touch of wild thyme and hints of rosemary. The palate is smooth and caressing, fine tannins, redcurrant and wild strawberry with a dab of black pepper on the finish. One of the more successful wines from the Domaine - a treat. Four barrels produced. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2021 Pommard Les Pezerolles 1er Cru contains 50% whole bunches this year. Dark berry fruit, briary and light sous-bois scents unfold on the nose - quintessentially Pommard. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy dark berry fruit, orange rind, bitter cherry and a touch of pain d'épices towards the finish. Lots of energy here - this Pommard looks destined to give 10-15 years of drinking pleasure. Very fine. |

Vinous (94-96)The 2021 Richebourg Grand Cru is aged with 50% whole bunches in 80% new oak. There is a touch of reduction on the nose, though despite that this seems impressively defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied, more expressive with fine-boned tannins, taut and fresh, quite intense (as you would expect from a Richebourg). I appreciate the manner in which it builds and exerts insistent grip and structure on the finish. Serious. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-89)A fine even purple. A nose of charm and delicious, adequately ripe, dark red fruit. Energetic fruit, with a touch of sandalwood, tightly wound with quite high acidity. Just slightly dry at the finish, though compensated by surprising length. Drink from 2024-2026. |

Vinous (87-89)The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Village showed a bit of reduction like its Morey counterpart, here, a little more red fruit developing. Vinous (94-96)The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a little more "gourmand" on the nose, cohering with time in the glass, loamy, almost peaty aromas emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-honed tannins. Lovely symmetry here, with a slight creaminess in texture towards the finish, where it feels very persistent. This is a lovely Charmes-Chambertin that should evolve wonderfully in bottle. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Ruchots 1er Cru is more introspective at the moment, with fine intensity, the fruit is darker than the Aux Chezaux, with hints of graphite in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, one of the "juiciest" Moreys that I have encountered with candied orange peel and spicebox on the finish. Superb. |
