Americas
The North American wine producing reputation can largely be attributed to the global fame and success of Napa Valley and Sonoma County in the United States. Although technically ‘new world’, its wines have the same devoted fan base (and often first-growth prices) as many classic European wines. Free from the shackles of European winemaking law, one can find a variety of cooler climate Cabs, Merlots, Pinots, Chardonnays and Rieslings that will entice all wine lovers.
South America is an exciting new melting pot of styles and flavours with a range of soils types and altitudes – taking international varietals and finishing with French winemaking techniques, or in the case of Argentinian Malbec, adopting a largely unloved grape and making it their own.

Vinous (93+)(14.8% alcohol; from ten-year-old vines on sandy soil with a lot of big stones; aged in 65% new oak; Vignoni describes this as a more rustic site surrounded by countryside, with a lot of native herb influence; production was just three tons per hectare in 2015). Saturated ruby. Very primary nose dominated by a stony quality. Highly concentrated and extremely primary, offering flavors of blackberry, blueberry, violet, licorice, wild herbs and lightly fusel crushed rock (Vignoni described this note as water on hot rocks). Finishes with an impression of medicinal reserve and slowly building length. This juicy but youthfully imploded wine, which carries a relatively low pH of 3.4, finishes firmly tannic and needs time to expand in the bottle. There's no easy sweetness here. |

James Suckling (96)This is really shows old vine character with black tea, bark and mushroom to the blueberry and black currant aromas and flavors. Full body. Round and soft yet tight. From 100-year-old vines. Drinkable but better after 2024. |

Vinous (90)(14.6% alcohol): Saturated ruby. Deeply pitched aroma of chocolate truffle conveys a port-like, almost raisiny ripeness. Then large-scaled, thick and sweet in the mouth, with the strong chocolate quality dominating. This downright confectionery Malbec will be a crowd-pleaser among fans of the style but I find it a bit heavy, in need of more energy and lift. I see no reason to hold off on drinking this as it's unlikely to become more interesting with bottle age. |
