While the West Ridge is a low-vigor site from the magnesium in the clay, the East Ridge is low vigor due to the lack of topsoil in the vineyard. This is also the first vineyard where they practice no-till farming, which they are working toward across the estate. Located on opposite sides of the property, the East Ridge Vineyard has more clay and sandstone soils than the West Ridge and experiences cold temperatures at night. Pouring a darker ruby/red color, the 2021 Pinot Noir East Ridge jumps out of the glass with mineral-tinged aromas of graphite lifted with darker fruit notes of black raspberries and fresh sage. Moving to the palate, it’s muscular in its structure, with a medium to full-bodied frame, ripe tannins, and a long finish. It’s going to need time to soften and unfurl, when it will lean into more umami and savory undertones. Drink 2026-2042.Inc. TAX€159.42 -

The 2021 Pinot Noir West Ridge is the oldest of the reserve-level wines, where the vines are 30+ years old and more influenced by the ocean. It’s more reserved initially on the nose, but as it opens, it reveals notes of framboise, sweet forest earth, cocoa, and violets. Medium-bodied and silky in texture, with fine tannins, even-keeled balance, and noble structure on the long finish, it’s refined and more high-toned, with a weightless feel and notes of fresh cranberry. With great length, fine tannins, and lifted fresh acidity, it’s a wonderful vintage for this wine, which also captures the concentration of the fruit without ever losing its graceful and lifted energy. Drink 2025-2040.Inc. TAX€158.64 -

Silky and aromatic, with understated depth, the 2014 will give readers a good idea of the personality of both the vintage and this site. Bursting from the glass, the 2017 Syrah has a mineral essence with aromas of summer sausage, black raspberry, blackberry and dark plum with savory aromas of black pepper spices, potpourri, touches of cocoa powder and freshly roasted coffee bean. The wine has a focus and precision that presides with the top bottlings from around the world. Aromas of newly tilled earth explode from the glass with floral notions of lilac and rose nuances that waft with spicy tones. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is seamless, bounding forth with complexity and a velvety richness that is exponentially compounded by the power the resides at its core. Devastatingly gorgeous, it takes my breath away, as the wine ends with a tightly wound, complex expression that continues to evolve over the elongated finish. With only 1,800 bottles made, good luck finding some, for if you do, you will undoubtedly be the envy of your wine treasure-hunting friends.Inc. TAX€1,076.32 -

More iron, beef blood, and foresty, mushroom, almost metallic notes all emerge from the 2019 Syrah High Contrast Vineyard, another savory, powerful, incredibly impressive wine in this lineup. Deep purple/plum-hued, this full-bodied beauty has both black and blue fruits, ripe, building, yet polished tannins, a great mid-palate, and one heck of a gorgeous finish. There's a liquid rock-like minerality as well as a meaty, leathery character that's not far off a great vintage of La Chapelle. It's certainly the richest and most concentrated of the trio of Syrahs in 2019. Give bottles 3-5 years and enjoy over the following 25-30 years.Inc. TAX€933.74 -

The “dark expression of Ark Vineyard" continues with the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Dark Ark. Deep garnet-black, the nose is profoundly earthy/meaty, slowly revealing beguiling notes of damp soil, truffles and crushed rocks, before giving way to a core of crème de cassis, black cherry compote and fruitcake with wafts of beef drippings and wild fungi. Full-bodied, rich and oh-so-earthy in the mouth, the palate delivers layers of black fruit preserves, beautifully offset by a lively backbone and velvety tannins, finishing epically long and layered. Probably my favorite in the entire lineup, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Few and Far Between comes from a tiny site just outside of Calistoga formerly known as the Pickett Road Vineyard. Like the 2015, the 2016 includes a touch of Cabernet Franc and spent the usual 32 months in 100% new French oak. This full-bodied, majestic Napa Valley Cabernet reveals a dense purple hue, awesome crème de cassis and kirsch fruit, amazing complexity in its spicy, sandalwood, and floral aromatics, and a massive yet elegant, lengthy personality.
