Wine Advocate (96+)

The 2015 Iubileus wants to present Gualtallary through a Malbec, even though there is some Cabernet Franc co-fermented with it. It's expressive and floral, with something earthy, a mixture of red and black fruit and a gentler palate. This is from Gualtallary at 1,300 meters in altitude, from 11-year-old vines on alluvial soils where the boulders are covered with calcium carbonate. The Malbec fermented in rolling barrels and the Cabernet Franc in open-top barrels. It matured in used barriques for 16 months. It's nuanced and floral, harmonious and terribly balanced. It's powerful and concentrated but with acidity and freshness. 2015 shows the power of Malbec but only within the right context; if isolated, it would be really subtle, elegant and fragrant. This is simply superb. 1,020 bottles were filled unfiltered in September 2016.

James Suckling (100)

Extremely pure and aromatic with sandalwood, blackcurrant, fresh-mushroom and rose-petal character. Full body and an extremely compact center palate with profound tannins that are so polished, drawing you down and down into the wine. Goes on and on. Be patient. Drink after 2025. 2,200 bottles made.

James Suckling (100)

A compact and polished Cobos with lots of dark fruit, as well as green olives, flowers and stems. Raspberries and forest fruit, too. Full-bodied, very tight and compressed. Melted tannins give great presence and mouth-feel, but the feeling is that they are invisible. It goes on for minutes. Sensational. So sophisticated and thoughtful. An archetypal malbec from Argentina. Better after 2027.

Vinous (93+)

(14.8% alcohol; from ten-year-old vines on sandy soil with a lot of big stones; aged in 65% new oak; Vignoni describes this as a more rustic site surrounded by countryside, with a lot of native herb influence; production was just three tons per hectare in 2015). Saturated ruby. Very primary nose dominated by a stony quality. Highly concentrated and extremely primary, offering flavors of blackberry, blueberry, violet, licorice, wild herbs and lightly fusel crushed rock (Vignoni described this note as water on hot rocks). Finishes with an impression of medicinal reserve and slowly building length. This juicy but youthfully imploded wine, which carries a relatively low pH of 3.4, finishes firmly tannic and needs time to expand in the bottle. There's no easy sweetness here.

Vinous (92)

(14.5% alcohol): Bright full ruby. Sexy, higher-pitched aromas of black raspberry, mocha and leather convey a distinctly wild element. Complex, soil-inflected flavors of dark berries, leather, coffee and mocha. Sweet, suave, highly concentrated wine with a silky texture and firm but ripe, harmonious tannins. Another couple years of bottle aging should be rewarded.

James Suckling (96)

This is really shows old vine character with black tea, bark and mushroom to the blueberry and black currant aromas and flavors. Full body. Round and soft yet tight. From 100-year-old vines. Drinkable but better after 2024.

Vinous (90)

(14.6% alcohol): Saturated ruby. Deeply pitched aroma of chocolate truffle conveys a port-like, almost raisiny ripeness. Then large-scaled, thick and sweet in the mouth, with the strong chocolate quality dominating. This downright confectionery Malbec will be a crowd-pleaser among fans of the style but I find it a bit heavy, in need of more energy and lift. I see no reason to hold off on drinking this as it's unlikely to become more interesting with bottle age.

Blackberries, ink and blueberries with black-tea and bark undertones. Full-bodied with density and richness that is well framed with beautiful, round and polished tannins and a seamless texture. Goes on for minutes. Try after 2026, but already great.

North America is somewhat difficult to pigeonhole – though technically ‘new world’, it is in the Northern Hemisphere, and the wines have the same devoted fan base (and often first-growth prices) as many classic European wines. Cooler climate Cabs, Merlots, Pinots, Chardonnays and Rieslings with old-world structure can all be found, though if anything is lacking by comparison it is consistency. South America is an exciting new melting pot of styles and flavours with a range of soils types and altitudes – taking international varietals and finishing with French winemaking techniques, or in the case of Argentinian Malbec, adopting a largely unloved grape and making it their own.
