The 2016 Au Sommet is gorgeous. Rich and unctuous in the glass, yet medium-bodied in structure, the 2016 is a wonderfully complete wine. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, new leather and spice infuse a Cabernet Sauvignon that is fleshy and yet delicate. The 2019 Au Sommet Cabernet Sauvignon is magnificent. A classic mountain wine, the 2019 offers up an exciting mix of dark fruit, gravel, graphite, savory herbs, chocolate and menthol. The bouquet alone is mesmerizing, but there is plenty of fruit depth, complexity and overall structure, too. The 2021 Chardonnay CIX Estate was tasted as a tank sample, due to be bottled in December 2022. It swans out of the glass with notions of ripe apricots, juicy pears, and quince paste, plus suggestions of grapefruit oil, lemongrass, and toasted almonds with a touch of beeswax. Full-bodied, rich, vibrant, multi-layered, and flawless, the palate is a seamless, complex, creamy powerhouse that is impossible to put down. The finish goes on forever. Yields were down by a whopping 40%, and yet all the elements are impeccably balanced. The 2020s in general are terrific at this estate, and the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is another beauty. Including 5% Petit Verdot, it’s a structured, concentrated, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon with plenty of pure cassis and graphite aromatics, building structure, and a deep, layered, incredibly impressive style.
