(in tank) Good full red. Reduced smoky, meaty nose. A step up in lift and juiciness from the Rognet, with a suave, fine-grained texture and enticing inner-mouth aromatic character. Offers a pleasing combination of supple texture and energy. Finishes with broad, ripe tannins. Showing very well considering that it was racked three days before my visit.

The 2009 Corton-Renardes shows fabulous depth from start to finish. Kirsch, hard candy, wild flowers and spices are some of the many notes that jump from the glass. Rich and seductive, the Corton-Renardes presents a highly representative picture of the vintage in its flashiness. This is a decidedly ripe, opulent style, but it works. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.

(all destemmed): Medium red. Complex if reticent aromas of redcurrant, minerals, smoked meat and pepper. Sweet on entry, then quite firm in the middle, showing hints of candied fruit. The chewy, firm but ripe tannins really clamp down on the finish today. A distinctly intellectual calcaire style of wine.

(Liger-Belair just bought this parcel on mostly clay and silt soil after years of farming it via a fermage arrangement; 50% vendange entier; just 20% of the crop was lost to frost): Dark red with ruby tones. Very ripe dark fruit aromas are complicated by strong soil notes of dried flowers (the veggie side of floral, says Liger-Belair), licorice and cut straw. More precise on the palate than the nose suggests, displaying the savory, sappy side of the vintage and very good intensity. Finishes with building, slightly dusty tannins and noteworthy energy. Not at all a rustic style of Gevrey, despite the fact that it's from a parcel on the wrong side of the Route Nationale.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Croix des Champs is more than 55% whole cluster. That stem addition comes across a little strongly on the nose and occludes the terroir profile. The medium-bodied palate offers firm tannins, plenty of red berry fruit laced with orange peel and slathers of marmalade, and a grippy finish with a light cola note on the aftertaste. Fine.

The 2018 Bourgogne Grand Chaillots is a mix of Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits Saint-Georges fruit, and it had been racked two weeks prior to my visit in December. It has a pretty raspberry and cranberry bouquet, floral in style, with subtle vanilla notes emerging with time; you cannot detect the 20% whole bunch. The medium-bodied palate offers sappy red fruit, and the whole bunch lends freshness and a subtle pepperiness toward the finish. Very fine.

(a new wine for Liger-Belair; vinified with 40% whole clusters and aging in 40% new oak): Bright medium ruby. Even darker on the nose than the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Les Trois Terroirs, offering scents of blackberry, violet and tropical dark chocolate and brown spice flavors. Deep, saturated red. Highly perfumed nose offers black cherry, licorice and flowers. Bright and pure, with excellent energy for young Clos Vougeot. The flavors of cherry, spices and minerals are sappy and chewy, conveying an impression of strong dry extract. Very stony, flinty Clos Vougeot with a lovely light touch and a very complex finish.

    Vinous (89-91)

Fine.

The harmonious palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and brambly red fruit laced with white pepper toward the elegant finish. Promising.

Very fine.

Medium deep purple, the most complex of the three. Cherry in the foreground, red berries behind. The fruit soars to the back of the palate, filling the mouth, a light but adequate acidity, and tannins which are well ripened. Then another surge of fruit to finish. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: November 2023.

Rather relaxed in the middle palate considering the tiny yield of 12 hectoliters per hectare, but finishes with a firm dusting of tannins.

Even a bit strict on the back, but perfumed and very long.
